We design a dorm room in a small area

Dorm Room Design

The dorm room is popular among those who cannot yet afford a separate apartment. This is not only about students, but also about young families who are just "getting on their feet." The issue of interior design is most acute if several people live in a room or a couple with a child. Zoning the room becomes vital in order to maintain at least the illusion of personal space. A shared kitchen, bathroom and toilet with neighbors allow you to unload the room from unnecessary interior items: stove, refrigerator, cooking area, and sometimes a dining table. To make the stay the most comfortable, develop a competent design of the dorm room. Proper design allows you to make housing more spacious and comfortable. Let's talk about what steps should be taken by residents of student and family "hostels" so that the room turns from a temporary haven into a beloved house, which you want to return to.

Dormitory room interior

To arrange a small room is quite simple. The most important thing is to use every square meter without leaving the space “ownerless”. Of course, it’s unlikely that it will be possible to hire a professional from owners of economy housing, so the design will have to be developed independently, based on ready-made projects in the public domain and the advice of venerable designers. The style in the room can be embodied in almost any. It is not recommended to use classic solutions in rooms with an area of 12 square meters (or less), which have strained relations with tight spaces.

Fashionable Provence, hi-tech, art deco, loft, minimalism, modern, country and fusion are at the service of young families or campus residents. Features of styles are played out differently depending on the number of residents and even the relationship between them. This primarily relates to sleeping places. More often than not, two people live in the common room. However, there are several options:

  • If a couple with a child lives in the room, then one sleeping place with a large bed and a children's corner should be equipped.
  • If the room is occupied by two girls or two guys, then you need to install twin beds.
  • In rooms larger even three or four people can huddle. Then already consider options with bunk beds, which will help to save living space.

The design will consist of several stages:

  • The choice of stylistic solutions and colors;
  • Finishing and lighting;
  • Selection of furniture;
  • Zoning;
  • Dressing.

Many venerable designers agree that it is better for inexperienced designers to choose minimalism for their first experience. With more complex styles, it’s easy to “miss” and make mistakes that later will not be so easy to fix. Minimalism is subject to clear rules, which are not so many.They are concise and understandable, as is the direction itself.

Zoning

Zoning will help make the space multifunctional. Unable to purchase spacious housing, you will have to embody original design ideas in temporary cramped rooms or come up with your own ways to solve the problem. In small spaces provide only two or three zones. If one person lives in the room, then the room is divided into a sleeping area, a living room and an office. For several residents, additionally provide "personal" zones, which combine with places for sleeping. Zoning is carried out in two ways:

  • Conditional;
  • Actual.

Dorm room zoning Yellow accents in the interior Desk with computer by the bed Colored curtains on the window Little table with lamps on the wall

The first option is good because it does not burden the space. For small rooms, it fits perfectly. Massive walls, albeit decorative ones, can crush a room, making it even closer. As actual delimiters, mobile screens, furniture or curtains are usually considered. Much also depends on the shape of the room. For example, rectangular rooms are easily separated through shelving or sofas.

Headlights

Such zoning will not harm the perception of space, on the contrary, it will allow you to increase the room in width, bringing its shape closer to square. For housing with a complex geometry of the walls, you will have to experiment in the project, trying different options to eliminate the emphasis on the shortcomings. In square rooms, the separation is carried out either partially near one wall, or symmetrically on both, leaving a wide passage between the delimiters. Conditional zoning, in turn, can be carried out using light, color combinations, a podium and various textures of the surfaces of finishing materials. For example, the sleeping area is decorated with artificial light-colored brick in the loft style, and the living room is plastered or wallpaper. By the way, surfaces with large prints for small rooms fall under the taboo. If you use patterns, then only small repeating ones.

Furniture

Furniture should be selected from catalogs where multifunctional models are presented. First of all, they equip the sleeping area. Two separate beds can be replaced with a bunk option, and it is better to refuse a double bed in favor of a folding sofa. Interesting models that combine two completely different sites. So, for example, cabinets can magically turn into beds. The latter when folded looks like a false facade. A full dining area, if one is present in the room, is replaced with a retractable or reclining table with a pair of folding chairs. It’s better to choose a “compartment” type with sliding doors. This will save on the "dead" zone, which would have to be given for swing structures. Optimum are built-in models. Although they cannot be moved, they will “capture” valuable meters under the ceiling, adding additional storage space. Corner cabinets look good in the interior. The shape of the facades can also be chosen original. Recently, models that are decorated with a wavy relief are popular. Smooth corners will add softness to the room. Similar solutions for interiors in contemporary styles are relevant. From materials it is recommended to choose a tree or its imitation (MDF), plastic and tempered glass. The latter can be used in the decoration of cabinet facades or in small interior items: coffee or dining tables, racks, open shelves. Closed models with doors located above eye level will load space. They also recommend using mirrors in the decor. With proper lighting, they will add perspective to the room.

Furnishing choose simple forms with smooth surfaces. Complex configurations that are decorated with embossed elements will add unnecessary heaviness to the room. Harmoniously, they will look only in large rooms.

Lighting

For small rooms, a multi-level lighting project is being developed to fill the room with “air”. This scheme includes: a ceiling chandelier, lamps above the working areas (local) and ambient light from point sources. We will dwell on the latter in more detail. Spotlights are placed around the perimeter of the room, above the upper panels of the cabinets and along the decorative "steps" on the ceiling. You can also equip the podium with appliances. If the small room also has low ceilings, then it is better to abandon the central chandelier in favor of several located above the functional areas.

Color spectrum

Light colors will prevail in the palette of interior colors. Traditionally, these are white, gray, beige and wood colors. Although at your service will be the whole gamut of pastel colors. Of course, without accents, the interior will look boring, therefore, bright “spots” dilute the room decor. Curtains, pillows, bedspreads, rugs, vases, caskets, flower pots, mirrors can serve as decorations. Contrasting colors should not be abused, therefore it is better to choose only one or two tones that shade the light finish and furniture. In the role of accent shades can be black, lilac, fuchsia, red, blue, juicy green, sunny yellow.

The interior of the room is 12 square meters. m

Rooms are 12 square meters. relate to small rooms, which nevertheless can easily fit a functional minimum. As partitions, it is recommended to use light “walls” made of translucent plastic or curtains. The latter often delimit the sleeping area. Furniture items are recommended to place a minimum: a bed, a wardrobe, a table for work. But it is better to abandon the TV stand by attaching it directly to the wall. Some rooms even have kitchenettes. To design the top, it is better to use a stretch ceiling, the glossy surface of which will add air and freedom to the space.Do not experiment with the color picker. It is better to dwell on traditional options for the chosen style. In minimalism, the standard color scheme consists of gray and white in furniture, decoration and accent black, purple, blue in the decor.

The interior of the room is 18 square meters. m

Premises with an area of 18 sq.m. usually have an elongated rectangular shape. Such rooms are traditionally zoned in the middle, and narrow furniture is installed around the perimeter. Lighting cannot be concentrated at only one point. For this reason, the ceiling chandelier is replaced by several fixtures. More lighting fixtures are placed in the area that is closer to the door and is accordingly fenced off from the window and natural light. Facades of cabinets choose mirrored, which will add space to the perspective. The accent area is one of the “short” walls. In square rooms, the use of volumetric furniture is allowed, which is located either in the center or around the perimeter of the room. Zoning is carried out using sofas, shelving, cabinets and decorative walls made of plastic in bright colors with a glossy surface.

What should not be missed in a small room

Before developing a project, it is worth exploring the advice of professionals in arranging a dormitory room. The five most valuable recommendations include:

  • "Furniture" advice. You should not choose for the interior of large, massive headsets that were popular in Soviet times. It is better to purchase each item individually. Firstly, the headset can adversely affect the perception of space. Secondly, the interior from different pieces of furniture will look fresh and original.
  • Stylistic advice. They do not recommend choosing directions for design that breathe luxury and are rich in decorative elements. Perhaps the owner’s soul lies precisely with the pompous classics, but it is easy to replace it with Art Nouveau gravitating to modern trends.It is also recommended to abandon the Italian, Spanish styles, art nouveau, baroque, retro and rococo.
  • "Window" advice. Do not use curtains made of heavy fabrics. Instead, the windows are covered with light curtains or blinds. The latter are relevant for minimalism and modern style. In any case, one of the zones will lack sunlight, therefore, they do not recommend further aggravating the situation by “wrapping up” the windows. By the way, curtains are not used at all in a loft.
  • Tip about the mirrors. Add more reflective surfaces to the room. Mirrors and glasses will “multiply” the light and increase the space profitably.
  • Striped advice. To expand the room, use striped decoration materials. For example, the floor in narrow rooms is lined with material with horizontal lines. Similar patterns can adorn accent walls. Do not overdo it with the “strip” from which it will charge in the eyes. Just a couple of accents will be enough.

Conclusion

Almost every second former student lived in a dormitory during their studies. For many, this time remains in the memories, as the brightest. Also, young families in the early years of marriage often have to huddle in small rooms before buying a full-fledged housing. Owners of cramped spaces, as a rule, are very limited in funds, so the design must be developed according to the budget plan. Inexpensive furniture and simple finishes are easily complemented by stylish decor. The result is a concise but aesthetically beautiful setting.
