Narrow Aisle Design Features

Narrow corridor

Layouts of different years left narrow, square and L-shaped corridors for apartment owners, and the options have a modest area. The first impression of housing is formed in the corridor, and therefore residents often have to solve the problem of overcrowding in the hallway. In Khrushchev, people can’t put up a long wall, and in Brezhnevka they can’t warm up normally. For this reason, they resort to the use of complex storage systems and methods to visually increase space. Someone is more lucky, in the sense that the corridor remained half empty, and the finish was light. The rest will have to design, buy furniture, make rearrangements, repairs, and sometimes with their own hands. Before the design of the hallway, the question of style arises sharply. You will either have to coordinate it with the rest of the premises, or make a decision for the first time if the apartment is empty.If desired, a long narrow corridor can be turned into a small art gallery or just a beautiful room.

Features of a narrow corridor: advantages and disadvantages

Hallways connect different rooms into one space. There are long and square corridors in housing of various formats: from apartments to country houses and office buildings. The function of compact options is to save housing space for useful use, and elongated ones - to organize access to a large number of rooms. In narrow corridors it is usually darker and there is no room for a turn of large furniture and objects. In contrast to these obvious disadvantages, length plays. Residents will find a place for a long wall and in addition - mirrors, a sofa, a bicycle, etc. The remoteness of the premises also brings benefits - for most it will be more convenient and comfortable. In long hallways, there is less clutter, so things are found there faster. Oblong corridors are used to design expressive design.

If it is convenient to move in a narrow room, then there is no need to free space from objects. It is enough to work on its perception with the help of one of the above methods. White should be added to the palette. Insert or background. You can not use snow-white in large quantities: in a cold corridor it will be uncomfortable. Light and pale shades perfectly replace white. Glossy and mirror surfaces, as well as glass, will transform the entrance hall not only in terms of “width”. The geometry itself will change.The shape of furniture, doorways, elements on the ceiling, walls also affects the appearance. In tight corridors, the smoothness of corners, transitions, and the presence of large textures and patterns come to the first place. Relief patterns, large plaster, large plinths will not affect the situation in the best way.

The ceilings

Built-in lights make the ceiling feel larger and deeper. But the effect will be much stronger with a light finish. This is how it is customary to decorate ceilings in all rooms. Most often, the choice is stopped on white. Among textures, they prefer glossy and satin - combining the qualities of matte and glossy. Some go further and turn the ceiling into a mirror. By the aesthetics and effectiveness of the imaginary expansion of space, this option is out of competition. At the same time, some people are supporters of level ceilings. Due to space saving, the idea of creating a stepped design is not the best one. But a ceiling of three or four low tiers with bright illumination will hide right angles and improve the perception of the situation: the ceiling will not seem low. As a non-standard move, 3D drawings are used. Their additional depth will “remove” the ceiling.

Walls

For visual expansion of the room, mainly light materials are chosen. In this sense, wood, artificial stone, plastic and wallpaper are suitable. If the room is carried out in a simple manner, without elements of luxury, then the walls can be finished with panels. An important point is to contrast the furniture with the walls. That is, the difference in lightness will give a feeling of "space". Natural or artificial decorative stone with its texture and natural luster is a universal option: it is suitable in any interior and qualitatively increases the “size” of the corridor. Walls can also be decorated in a more original way: with bamboo and wallpaper. In addition to the above approaches, the space is expanded with the help of doorways.They are made slightly rounded on top or generally arched. In some rooms, openings are formed without door leaves, which further increases the space.

Do not use whitewashing, because regular removal of traces of sweat in the corridor will be difficult!

Floor

The floor is often given the role of a contrasting element. The light walls and ceiling look more distinctly above the dark floor. It is not worth it to be completely dark, it is better to dwell on light brown, dark orange, gray tones. At the other extreme, the white color of the floor will generally give the person the impression that he is in a hospital. In the interior under classicism, baroque or rococo, it is better to put yellowish marble. Classic cladding options for a simple interior and modern styles - tiles and laminate, to a lesser extent - parquet and linoleum. The most practical coating is tile, despite the fact that it is beating - it is not difficult to replace a damaged element. Laminate is ideally combined with the styles of hi-tech, constructivism, loft. In any case, it is better to dwell on options that are average in lightness.

Color spectrum

A good selection of colors and especially their combinations will bring more benefits than it seems at first glance. Combinations include contrasting or bright colors - to visually expand the room. The “widening” color is one hundred percent suitable for furniture sets on the market in cool, dirty shades. Among the color schemes, wallpapers with a simple checkered pattern deserve attention. Vertical stripes visually increase the height of the corridor, and horizontal stripes increase the length of the walls. The surface of the corridor is drawn to a tone darker or lighter than furniture elements. In the color scheme of the latter, in turn, saturated bright inserts in the form of stripes and squares will not interfere.For halls in strict color schemes, a set of similar shades is chosen: for furniture and walls. A palette of dozens of similar tones will add options for creating transitions, make the room pleasing to the eye.

Suitable styles

These are considered:

  1. High tech.
  2. Loft.
  3. Minimalism.
  4. Provence.

The choice of styles is limited by a minimum number of factors. The geometric component of the hi-tech style is normally combined with long narrow rooms, corridors. The hallway in the spirit of high technology is saturated with backlight, built-in lamps. The LED and fluorescent lighting harmoniously look. The popularity of the loft style continues to grow: the corridor is filled with original elements with slight negligence. The room can generally be designed as an attic with walls under a "brick". Lighting is organized by constructive options "under" lights or spotlights. Minimalism in a narrow corridor is not so much a style as a design principle. The emphasis in it is the size of the cabinets, their shape, convenient organization of space. You will need a laconic color scheme. The Provence-style corridor is turned into a soft environment, furnished with fragile details and furniture in whitened tones.

Choice and competent arrangement of furniture

The situation will need to be planned in advance, and the mini-project will not hurt. The first task is to identify unnecessary and important things. Based on the calculations, it will be possible to determine the desired volume of sections for storage. Then calculate the optimal dimensions of the furniture. There should be a passage for two people in the corridor, a place for convenient replacement of bulbs and lighting fixtures. The next moment is aesthetics. Combine general recommendations and personal preferences, while limiting themselves to practical possibilities. Shallow sets are bought into narrow corridors, ideally 30 cm thick. Among all the furniture, attention should be paid only to the mini class.The optimal result is achieved by special options made to order. Then the drawers, compartments, shelves and cabinets will correspond to the wishes for functionality. In the free space of the walls, it does not hurt to organize fastenings for large accessories.

Lighting

In narrow rooms, small and at the same time powerful lighting fixtures are relevant. If possible, have a cascade of spotlights. Of these, decorative ceiling compositions are sometimes collected. One of the corridor sides is decorated with wall lamps.

In combination with light walls, the effect of specularity and, accordingly, some expansion will appear. The underlining of interior doors does not hurt - a small backlight. With the help of tape and track lights, they improve lighting and aesthetics. Linear options are used with care, in any case avoid placement on the floor. In hallways with wide skirting boards, diode illumination along the edges of the decorative element will not be superfluous. Built-in furniture and openings are also emphasized by artificial lighting. Manufacturers equip the external and internal furniture spaces with light sources - especially for dark rooms.

It is better to refuse volumetric chandeliers, even in a classic interior!

Decoration

Decorative wood paneling, boiserie, is suitable for an expensive interior. Carved ornaments will take part of the space, but with the addition of pomp, the perception of the corridor will improve. He will become more solid. The hallway is also decorated with drawings. In this sense, it is better to just use wallpaper with a print or decorative pattern. In addition to wallpaper, the interior is also finished with stucco. Textured - a simple option among decorative, decoration itself takes shape after application. Relief plaster is formed by stampings and stencils. The Venetian will cost more than other types and will be appropriate in classical styles, as it resembles a cut of stone in appearance.A universal finish is considered artificial stone. This solution is suitable for any style design and for almost all types of walls, including thin partitions.
Among the decorative objects often used:

  • objects of art;
  • pictures;
  • mirrors with decorative frames;
  • flowerpots;
  • small rugs.

Conclusion

The oblong narrow hallways have strengths and weaknesses. On the one hand - this is a good organization of space, on the other - the irrational use of living space. Long corridors usually have a T-shape and take up more space than a living room. At the same time, permutations in the corridor are always accompanied by great inconvenience or simply impossible. It is possible to improve the situation due to new furniture or “transformation” of space. The easiest way is to update the ceiling. Perhaps enough new lighting - brighter and better. In most situations, you will need to replace materials and correct the color scheme. People use soft light colors, several contrasts, striped patterns, color depth. Any materials are suitable, only harmony and the effect of "expansion" are important. The hallway is then further decorated. For this purpose, paintings are often used.
