Expanding the space of a narrow children's room

Narrow kids room design

If a child has his own separate room, then this is convenient for both himself and his parents. Usually a young family arranges their home in such a way that it is comfortable for two. Kids do not appear at all immediately after the start of a joint life. For this reason, their rooms are usually decorated in a hurry, and their location is not necessary. Arrangement of children's rooms in the attics (residential attics), in tiny "closets" near balconies or rooms artificially created from large rooms by installing a partition. The latter option usually involves dividing the box of the correct square shape into two narrower smaller areas. The most acute problem of arranging a separate zone for a child is faced by residents of the Khrushchevs, since a small apartment does not allow them to especially swing out with repairs and redevelopment. The design of a narrow children's room can be developed independently.However, in order to not get an uncomfortable option, it is necessary to take into account a number of nuances at work that will help to hide the length of the room and visually increase its width. When creating a design project take into account the number, gender and age of the small inhabitants of the room:

  • Baby;
  • One child is a schoolboy: a boy or a girl;
  • Two children (one gender or different);
  • Teenager: Boy, Girl

The design style and its features will depend on these nuances. For example, bedrooms for babies are designed with emphasis on the convenience of the mother, who will take care of him. For schoolchildren, they must take into account the presence of a comfortable learning area, and in teenage rooms they are considered with the taste of its inhabitant. In rooms where two heterosexual children live, it is necessary to think over competent zoning of space.

Basic decoration recommendations

When arranging a narrow children's room, in an apartment with a lack of sq.m. You must pay attention to the following aspects of interior design:

  • Color spectrum. With the help of shades and tones, you can create not only comfort in the nursery, but also add extra meters in the right places;
  • Decoration Materials. Their contrasts conditionally zone the room;
  • Multilevel lighting. Using artificial light, they create strict, modern interiors, but they can also emphasize the accent area of the room and at the same time “darken” the places where the disadvantages are hidden;
  • Furnishings. The perception of the nursery depends on the arrangement of these interior objects: as a single space or “sector” room, from which “pieces” fall out;
  • Decor With the help of beautiful little things, the interior is “polished”, like the processing of expensive stone.Just a couple of awkward movements of an inexperienced jeweler and the luster of uneven edges will spoil the aesthetic appearance of the jewelry.

In rooms of non-standard sizes, multifunctional furniture plays a special role. It allows you to save space and fit in the available area more "useful" elements.

Bright walls and floors - the best finish for a narrow room

Light floors and walls are perhaps the easiest and most convenient option for a visual increase in space. Pastel shades can add “air” to the nursery and emphasize the accuracy of the finish. Those who want to put a couple of bright touches on the room’s palette are recommended to use wallpaper with small drawings on “short” walls. It is better to refuse from voluminous, large prints, as they will bring nothing but an extra “load” on the interior. If you want to create a design that will look strict and restrained, then resort to black and white colors in the decoration. Dark is acceptable for use with "short" walls in the area of skirting boards or for a pair of horizontal stripes. Experienced designers advise to avoid extravagant options, where the bedroom is decorated in "heavy", contrasting shades. Such options can only be experimental in nature, and in long rooms competently to beat such a color scheme will not always work even for professionals.

How to plan a furniture arrangement

The most common mistake in the design of long rooms is the parallel placement of furniture in two "rows" on each wall. In no case should you resort to such a thing, as two additional “obstacle courses” will stretch even more and narrow the room. Furniture should “crush” the nursery in length into separate sectors. They are visually perceived as separate zones. If the arrangement is done correctly, then the subconscious "picture" of a narrow and uncomfortable room will be destroyed.It will be replaced by an image of a neat room, as if assembled from several square platforms. There are usually two conventional zones: rest and study. If the child also has a balcony, then add a separate playground for games. The working area is most in need of natural light, but the window seat is often the most calm and the bed already claims to be. How to be in this situation? Organically “equip” both zones, leaving a platform in front of the door for the game corner.

Light furniture in a narrow nursery

If a child is divided by a boy and a girl, then the delimitation of their "possessions" is necessary. A separator can be a through shelf with books and toys, a mobile screen or curtain.

The bed must be functional

At the word “bed” in the minds of many, the imagination draws a spacious, wide sleeping bed, possibly even with a canopy under an avalanche of soft pillows on a neatly laid blanket. In narrow children's rooms, this fantasy will have to be crumpled and thrown away, since the real place to relax should be compact. It is desirable that it additionally performs several more functions. In simple versions, a folding sofa or couch, designed for one person, can act as a bed. The convenience of the kit is obvious: even when folded during the day, the child will always have the opportunity to sit down or lie down. For a short break, there is no need to straighten the bed completely. If there are two children in a room, then of course they use two-tier models. One of the varieties of the latter is the "attic". In it, the bed is located on top, and its lower part is a combination of a convenient workplace and sections for storing things. Some beds can be completely folded into a compact module, which is usually decorated with small hinged shelves. During the day it takes up a minimum of space and allows you to move freely around a cramped room.

For babies choose universal cots with a changing table and a place to store diapers and diapers in the kit.

Cabinet selection and additional storage

It is better to refuse a full-fledged cabinet, which will press on the room with its dimensions. In extreme cases, coupes of angular structures are used, requiring little space. If one of the “short” walls does not have a window or doorway, then a narrow dressing room is built into it. It will become a "trump card" for visual "shortening" of a narrow room. Storage areas are best organized in the most unexpected places: in the drawers of the decorative podium, under the bed, on open shelves under the ceiling, in specially designed boxes. Usually miniature cabinets or chests of drawers are already built into the sleeping-working kit. Fortunately, in children things are usually less than in adults, which allows you to "pack" them into small shelves and boxes.

Wardrobe in a narrow nursery

You can not use closed places to store things that are located at eye level and above. They will create the illusion of cramped and "creeping" walls on the guests.

Create comfort with soft and even light.

When creating a design project, pay particular attention to lighting. Do not limit yourself to just a ceiling chandelier. In a long room, her light will not be enough for distant corners, and the sharp shadows will not seem cozy. Traditionally, lighting devices are placed on three levels:

CeilingCentral lightingIn narrow nurseries, you can move away from the rule and place two symmetrical chandeliers at each end of the room.
DirectionalWork area lightingIt is carried out using table, floor lamps and sconces.
Broken or “cozy”This type of lighting will affect the "temperature" in the room.With the help of spotlights, which are located in different areas of the nursery, the effect of home comfort is achieved. Soft, diffused light will smooth out harsh lines and help emphasize the dignity of the interior.

Light sources are not only installed on racks and cabinets, but also built into the ceiling "relief", if it is made of drywall, using the frame method.

How to visually expand a room

To prevent the proportions of the room from catching the eye, short walls are made accented, and those that are longer decorated in neutral colors. The option with zoning of a rectangular children's room is relevant. It is divided into two (three) identical square platforms: for sleeping and for learning (games). The recreation area is traditionally located at the window, as the abundance of natural light will make it more comfortable. Particular attention is paid to decoration if fragmentary flooring (parquet board, laminate) is used, rather than a solid canvas (self-leveling floor, linoleum). It is necessary to lay it in such a way that the wide edges of the modular rectangles lie across the nursery. This design technique will help expand a narrow, long room. If the child’s room is adjacent to the balcony or loggia, then the layout of the nursery is reviewed. The window and door separating the additional room are dismantled, which allows you to let in more natural light into the room. After all, as you know, it smooths corners and softens the imperfections in the shape of the room.

Decor and choice of curtains

Using textiles (curtains, rugs, bedspreads, pillows), you can “turn” the space and expand it with horizontal stripes. The more contrast they are, the more intrusive the resulting effect. The curtains give preference to airy Roman options or laconic classics. An abundance of decor in such rooms is not welcome, although not a single nursery that a priori has a "lively" atmosphere can do without it at all. A garland is hung across the room, a “horizontal” collage of photos or a chalkboard is placed on the accent wall, the floor is covered with a soft rug, and in some areas lamps with shades and legs of original shapes are installed.

Children's for the boy

In the children's room for a boy of any form, blue, blue, green and white tones prevail. In narrow rooms, accent walls are finished with wallpaper with a thematic small pattern: robots, astronauts, cars. Sea and space motives in the interior will look original. The first style solution uses ropes, ship models (or options in bottles), decorative helms, sails and other paraphernalia familiar to every lover of books by Jules Verne, Daniel Defoe and Robert Stevenson. In space interiors they use starry sky maps, telescopes, and fluorescent colors that give out light at night. Accent walls are decorated with panoramas of Martian “cities”, borrowed from Ray Bradbury’s descriptions, images of constellations and unknown galaxies of the Universe.

For girl

The color palette for girls is chosen from softer shades (pink, lilac, green), completely avoiding contrasts. White and gray will help add space to your swing. The use of floral ornaments or small floral patterns is encouraged. The original addition will be a fabulous house in which you can play with dolls and arrange "crazy tea parties", as in the works of Lewis Carroll. In rooms for girls, special attention is paid to decor, since it can be made with your own hands with your daughter, turning the design of the room into a fascinating process. Together they sew bedspreads, pillowcases and rugs using the patchwork technique, make interior dolls, dream catchers, knit napkins and flowerpots for indoor plants.

For two children

Rooms for two children are usually decorated using multifunctional furniture. In narrow rooms, unfortunately, it is not recommended to use a "parallel" arrangement, that is, when two separate beds stand against opposite walls. But no one forbids placing them near one, dividing them with a conditional partition.Thus, each child will have his own personal space, the need for which will only grow with age. It is also better to count the working area with a division into two, so that the children do not interfere with each other when they are engaged in different tasks (study and games).

Conclusion

A children's room is always decorated differently than the rest of the room. A special atmosphere should be created in it, in which it will be comfortable not only for parents, but also for small residents. Before creating a project, it is recommended to consult with the child himself to find out more about his preferences. This will help to piece together the correct stylistic picture, which will be based on the wishes of a small person, because he will have to live in it, not adults.
