Attributes of large private estates are extensions, separate garages and open carports. For cars, a convenient entry and exit from the territory is also being designed. If with the second moment everything is more or less clear, then the choice of “garage or roof” can lead to the analysis of many arguments. Closed garages have more storage options. This solution is classic and time-tested. Sheds with open sides are used as an addition to the garage or the only parking lot for the car. It is logical that in addition to the "automobile issue", together with the design of a garage or a visor, nuances for the design of the site are solved. In some cases, it is better to abandon a simple closed extension to the house, and sometimes a canopy with supports will be superfluous. For example, when the territory is already completely no place. To assemble a carport with your own hands, you need to be able to draw up a plan, and also - process materials and connect them into complex nodes.
As for the merits, the canopy is primarily a successful alternative to the garage. Under construction do not lay a large foundation, and thus save. The benefits include the construction timeline. Installation of the canopy will take no more than a few weeks, although without outside help it will not be possible to produce it. Only parts of the canopy are collected on their own. A place under the visor can be either a plus or an unsuccessful option. On the one hand, the canopy does not so well cover from the scorching sun, which can spoil the color of the car and make stuffiness in the cabin. On the other hand, there will be quick access to the car, which is very convenient in the summer. An open construction is part of the design of the site.
The disadvantages of the canopies are obvious. In the garage, the car is better protected from theft, because attackers will first need to get into the building itself. In addition, the car under the visor is not protected from heavy rainfall.
Features of accommodation
The main accommodation options:
canopy as part of the house;
standing separately.
In the first case, the visors differ according to the design principle. They are either envisaged at the very stage of construction, or they are completed later. Some are relatively light buildings close to the main residential building, not far from it or at the end of the path leading inland.
As for the different options for the canopies that are part of a residential building, in this sense there are standard and original ways of placement. Empty space for cars is sometimes made exactly under the living room or hall.Sometimes the visors are on the side. Then they are erected in the form of a continuous structure with one or two open sides. Garages are also made with props. In this case, we are talking about only one roof or, again, about a figure with at least one missing wall. Parking is also done in the form of mini tunnels or the space under the protruding block / canopy of the building.
The location and access to it should be planned so that the car does not cross the "active" part of the territory!
The size
Construction begins with a plan, and drawing on the territory itself does not hurt. In general access to the network there are ready-made drawings.
They approach the key moment when they pick up a canopy. Protection from the sun and rain do as much as possible in area. Oriented to the dimensions of the car. The use of the same carport will be too unequal for cars that, for example, have a 2-meter difference in length. Projects with universal awnings are most likely not suitable.
The optimum carport height for cars starts at 2.5 m. The width is made at least 1 m more than the transport. The larger it is, the easier it will be to park. The minimum margin in length is also 1 m. In practice, a gap of less than 1.5 m does not make sense: due to rain, snow, etc. The rule of one-meter margin works for carports for several cars. This makes the minimum interval between cars.
Material for frame and supporting structure
The "skeleton" of the mini-garage is formed from the following materials:
tree;
metal;
a rock;
brick;
concrete.
The supporting posts and frame parts of the roof are made using precise geometric technology with straight, diagonal and rounded elements. In the case of wood, there are at least 4 basic options for connecting roof parts. They are connected by ordinary and building hardware. Metal structures are welded. Work with wood and metal requires the participation of at least a few people.With brick, stone and concrete buildings, the situation is more complicated. You can still independently erect a brick structure, but not concrete or stone. In the last 2 cases, teams of craftsmen work. Metal canopies look good against garden plants, as well as wooden ones. They have many absolute advantages, while wood with good processing has at least a beautiful appearance. Stone mini-garages are not much inferior to them in terms of aesthetics. In addition, stone structures look more modern. Brick and concrete canopy is decorated with panels or something like that.
Stone, concrete or brick
For self-construction, these are not the best materials. The frame and the supporting structure of brick, concrete and stone are calculated much longer. Heavy equipment is used to install bulky items. The coatings of the finished canopy are left unchanged or trimmed with something like lining, siding, relief panels. As a result, owners get an aesthetically attractive building and save money by abandoning a conventional garage. The combination of materials, including topcoat, offers advantages in terms of durability. Maintenance of stone / brick / concrete supports does not require much effort, but takes more time than servicing structures on thin poles. Brick construction is, first of all, durability and variability in terms of configuration. They try to emphasize good taste and status with a stone, and even coatings do not require additional decoration.
Metal
Including profiled pipes with a cross section of 80 × 80 mm are used. Modifications with protection against dampness are selected, because the metal undergoes corrosion. After pouring the foundation, points are marked for the pillars, after which deepenings are made with a drill. This is a convenient approach with high accuracy. The holes are then poured with concrete. The columns are connected by cross members and go to the main frame.The metal top of the canopy is mounted with a welding machine. The roof frame is made closed or everything is left free, except for the top layer with roofing material. That is, in the end they get a monolithic structure or a canopy with a farm. The upper part of the metal canopy is assembled from profiled pipes with a section of 40 × 20 mm. Under wide awnings, you will have to make long curved elements, and the complexity of the work will increase several times.
Tree
To assemble a home-made structure made of wood will be able to those who are more or less versed in carpentry and construction. Self-processing and preparation of the tree leads to a significant loss of time. It includes cutting, harvesting elements. Although the preliminary work will take at least a week, the implementation will be relatively simple, especially since there is the largest selection of tools for working on wood. All nodes are connected by plates and hardware. Wood is used mainly in the form of bars. They are inserted into the foundation or screwed in with special metal joints with large anchors. The material for the canopy is treated with double care so that no fungus appears on the tree next to vehicles and car accessories. From an aesthetic point of view, the worst that can happen is cracking. Wood is inferior in durability to other materials.
Varieties of roof
There are not so many of them, as is the case with the roofs of residential buildings. But in options for canopies there are also geometric aspects. It is worth highlighting 5 main categories: single-pitched canopies, double-pitched, hip, arched, complex. At the same time, in addition to the types of roofs themselves, there are also options with an impromptu canopy, when another building, for example, the residential building itself, plays its role. Shed roof is famous for its simplicity, versatility, design. The option with one horizontal slope is the same classic as the hip roof of the house.As for the gable canopy for the garage, it gives great protection against external factors. Hip roofing is even better in this sense, because it consists of 4 slopes. Complex geometric roofs successfully fit into the landscape design of the site. Arched are also suitable for this. Rounded awnings look great as segments for a number of car parks.
Single slope
Simple and at the same time stylish option. A single-pitched carport is 1 plane, usually with a slight slope, and sometimes just horizontal. Visors from a single slope are sometimes free-standing, but they are usually planned as an extension to the house. In this case, he usually has a drawback in the form of a small angle of inclination, which leads to the accumulation of debris, leaves, snow. For the same reason, the roof should be designed taking into account possible overpressure on parts of the roof. Deformation will spoil the appearance, it may make it impossible to store the machine under the roof until the defect is corrected. At the same time, the single-slope option with a pronounced slope gives good protection against precipitation and accumulates less snow than all other types of roofs. A single-pitched canopy is designed and installed relatively quickly and simply.
Gable or hip
These types of roofs are erected with more complex calculations of the load. Gable and hip options better cover from the effects of natural forces. Two planes with a connection at an angle are a roof with two slopes. The hip canopy necessarily has triangular slopes and trapezoidal elements, therefore it consists of four fragments. The construction technology of two- and four-pitched roofs allows you to achieve a variety of shapes and configurations of the upper part of the structure. With your own hands it will be easier to make a design with a large rafter. And the easiest option involves the construction of a farm of iron strips under the ceiling-roof.Custom parking can be done without these devices. At the same time, with your own roof assembly, you can also choose frame options. For example, do without Mauerlat and use the upper harness in his role.
The choice of roofing material
Instead of numerous selection criteria, one principle can be applied - use the same material as for the roof of the main house. The justification of the monolithic option grows if the canopy is an extension. For roofing material on a rafter structure, a crate is made of transverse slats or paintings. Under the hard coverings form a lattice, and under the soft - a continuous version of the paintings. At the same time, accurate information about the step for sparse crates, as well as about the configuration as a whole, is indicated by the manufacturers. Hard coating is definitely better. And one of the options, corrugated board is suitable for self-assembly. If you take polycarbonate, it is better - multi-chamber. With at least 3 rows of plastic and 2 rows of cells - to protect vehicles from heat. By the same principle, you can take roofing material in light shades.
Polycarbonate
The buyer usually gets 2 options: monolithic material or cellular. They almost do not differ in standard sheet width - about 2000 mm. The cellular one has long models of panels of 6 and 12 m, while the monolithic standard is 3 m. In terms of specific gravity, the monolithic is worse, because it is almost 6 times heavier: 7.2 kg / m² at 1.3 kg / m² for segmented ones. The latter have a larger bending radius. Monolithic polycarbonate lasts up to 25 years, and less reliable cellular - only 10.
Segmented material has a higher resistance to heat transfer. But the light transmittance is approximately equal. In the cell, it corresponds to 82%, and in the other variety - 85%.
Choosing the ideal thickness will help SNiP II-3-79 and SNiP 21-01-97. Protection from strong winds will provide models with a thickness of 6 to 8 mm.Panels thicker than 10 mm are placed due to difficult weather conditions.
Decking
When choosing corrugated board pay attention to 5 criteria, not counting the issue of delivery. Including such:
Thickness;
Appearance;
Wave features;
Flatness of the edges;
Price.
The first of them, the thickness is selected according to the principle "the greater the indicator, the better." If you apply flooring for the roof, then the second rule also works: there should not be an excessive load on the base. For roofing on the site, a thickness of 0.5 mm or more is suitable. Sheets should be checked for stains and scratches. This is the second point. In turn, the geometry of the wave determines compatibility with the roof. Look at the dimensions and thickness of the ridge. The edges of a good corrugated board are perfectly even and have no notches. Poor material by this criterion will become rusty in places with defects. You should not buy a professional sheet with a large thickness and low price. It is probably of poor quality or even a fake. Delivery sometimes becomes a problem, because the sheets at this moment can bend and deteriorate.
Roof tiles
It is hard and soft. People prefer bitumen and metal.
Soft is not laid at low temperatures, because it partially hardens and becomes brittle. You can’t walk on it in the heat - in this case, it softens. On the other hand, bituminous tiles give a minimum of waste on curved surfaces. Complex shaped elements are trimmed with soft tiles. In terms of durability, it also has an advantage, but it all depends on the operation. With a maximum of 50 years for metal, bitumen can last as long as 70 years.
Hard tiles - more reliable and practical. It does not deform, has a high temperature limit. But because of abrupt snowfalls, a system is sometimes put on it to detain it. These are additional costs. Among the disadvantages of metal tiles there is also the problem of noise resonance.
How to lay out a platform under a canopy
On heaving soils, it makes sense to make a paving slab coating. Through small gaps in the tile, moisture will evaporate in sufficient quantities, and the coating, accordingly, will warp to a lesser extent. The tile is laid out on a carefully tamped crushed stone or a layer of sand with cement, after which the cloths are driven deeper with a rubber hammer. Instead of tiles, paving stones and natural / artificial stone are also used. The popularity of a relatively new coating - the lawn grill - is growing. Ecological parking is a rigid plastic grate filled with lawn grass. The main advantage is that this eco-parking does not require any maintenance. The ranch option will be relevant: the soil is strengthened with sand, and then with fine gravel. Then they erect a fence of poles and boards along its length. They are painted white.
There are only 3 key requirements for materials:
Durability;
The ability to withstand the mass of the car, and with a large margin of safety;
Compatibility with the design on the site.
DIY wooden canopy
Such materials and devices will be needed:
aluminum rivets;
wood screws;
boards (including for lathing);
Reiki
bars;
corrugated board;
metal horse;
cement;
sand;
antiseptic.
First of all, they form the base: formwork is collected from the boards. They also use boards for the crate. The place is chosen perfectly flat. In the case of sloping places on the site, the foundation is also possible, but only if this slope is minimal, within a few degrees. Then make the supporting structure of the bars with fastening in concrete. Planks of the same configuration are used in the creation of rafters. Different supports are added to the elements of the rafter structure. In one of the options is a bolt and a puff. In the second case, they do without a crossbar, but additionally use run and strut. The third method involves the use of Mauerlat, reclining, run and rack.The fourth version of the rafters is assembled with a crossbar, girder, Mauerlat, prone and strut. All elements are used in accordance with the number of rafters (rafter legs). At the end, they install the roof, and with their own hands it is better to assemble it from corrugated board.
Pouring the foundation and installation of the supporting structure
First of all, choose a suitable site. We draw up a plan on a piece of paper or even on this free area. We select the perimeter for parking at the level of 3 × 6 m. In principle, this section is enough for a spacious structure, but for 2 cars its configuration will not work. So, we calculate the right angles for the structure. You can verify their parameters after measuring the distance between points at a distance of 3 and 4 meters from the corner, in line with it: the distance should be exactly 5 meters. Then we make a castoff and calculate the remaining angles. Next, hammer the pegs and measure the diagonals. The allowable difference is 5 mm. According to the size of the figure, we fill the concrete platform and prepare slats and bars for the supporting structure.
First, the frame racks are mounted. They are fixed to concrete with steel corners. They are screwed from below and from 2 sides to the beam, but there is also a special fastener with a shape that is inserted into the concrete base. This is a kind of bracket with a large anchor. There are even options with an adjustable bracket that allows you to change the height of the rack. For a canopy it will still be superfluous. If after assembling the frame it is planned to fill the floor, then the foundation is made columnar.
Frame assembly
For the installation of the upper harness, similar bars are used, as is the case with the supports of the support system. Fixation is carried out due to reinforced steel strips or corners. Theoretically, it is possible to make fasteners only due to self-tapping screws, but then the strength of the joints will be in question. In the process, check the diagonals. Rafters strengthen the crossbars, screeds, struts and struts.Safety margin is calculated from the considerations that a strong wind will blow on the roof. The connection of rafters is still on the ground. Rafter legs are collected and re-checked for conformity in size. For a site with a width of 3 m, the length of the rafters will be no more than 2 m, taking into account the height of the roof break. To create a triangle of the roof, rails of 50 × 50 mm are used and the pitch is not more than half a meter between them. In regions with a snowy winter, the profile of the rails is chosen at the level of 100 × 50 mm.
Installation of roofing material
Among the materials for covering the roof, it is better to choose corrugated board. For a gable roof of 3 meters wide, one and a half sheets will suffice on each side. One of the rows will have to consist only of half the sheets, which is why we place it from the bottom, cut part up. So that the slice hides the row that is higher. Another option for placing the slice is under the ridge. We lay the corrugated board, and if the overlap is 2 waves, then the protection against leaks will improve significantly. Regardless of the number of waves in the inlet, we fasten it with aluminum rivets. The joint from this will become tight. We screw the screws into the gutter, because there the temperature expansion will be minimal. In addition, we seal the hole with a press washer. We fasten the horse with rivets or all the same screws with a press washer - through the upper elements of the corrugated sheet and with an interval of 30 cm.
To avoid small leaks, use a wave compactor!
Conclusion
Before deciding on an open carport for a car, you should think about the practical side of the issue. An anti-theft system can be installed on the car, but a covered garage also provides protection against vandalism and natural elements. The open option should be liked first of all by lovers of design decisions and experiments. With a visor, you can develop the basic idea that was used in designing the facade of a house or garden.The construction algorithm consists of 5 stages, the last of which will be the installation of the structure itself. First, they select the configuration and size of the mini-garage. It does not hurt to leave a place in reserve or just make the most spacious option. In the future, material is chosen for the supports and the frame, as well as for the roof and the area around the canopy. These are three separate components, and the choice in each of them can be arranged as you like. The construction of an open parking lot includes pouring the foundation, installing the frame and roofing.
