Weaving newspaper tubes for beginners: step-by-step workshops

Newspaper tubes

Weaving from a rod is a rather ancient craft, with the help of which various household items were made. In large modern cities, it is problematic to get a real vine, because many needlewomen switched to weaving from newspaper tubes, which, with proper skills, proper twisting, staining, are indistinguishable from a natural vine. With the help of such affordable, cheap material, various decorations for the interior are made, including holiday, decorative kitchen containers, children's toys and souvenirs.

History of weaving

In working with newspaper tubes, the same techniques are used as when weaving from vines, straws. People were engaged in weaving even before they learned how to process wood and metals. Such material was used to make baskets for fishing, simple pieces of furniture of an ancient dwelling, fences for small pets. In Russia, baskets were often woven for picking mushrooms, berries, huge baskets, cradles, bread bins and bast shoes. Birch bark was also used.

Mushroom Baskets

The first to invent paper weaving was in the eastern countries: China, India, Korea, when paper was no longer too expensive, and the vine was inaccessible to a city dweller. In Europe, the countries of the former Union, such a hobby has become popular recently, but has already won the hearts of many hand-made fans. The main advantage of such needlework is that even a child will succeed in weaving from paper tubes - they are more malleable than a vine and not as fragile as straws.

How to twist the tubes

What you need to do to get a "paper vine":

  • newsprint is cut into strips six to nine cm wide. - the newspaper is folded with an "accordion", cut into folds;
  • then the sheet is tightly wound on a needle diagonally, starting from the corner;
  • when the strip ends, the corner must be greased with glue and fixed;
  • one end of the resulting tube will always be slightly thicker than the other, which allows you to increase the length to infinity by inserting the tube into the tube. If everything is done correctly, the mount comes out very durable, and the seam is completely invisible.

How to make newspaper tubes

Add colors

Newspaper tubes can be painted in any color, but the most popular option is a coloring that mimics a real vine. To make a box, casket, basket or paper toy seem “real”, the material for it is painted with alcohol or water stain. There are many shades of stain - dark and light walnut, stained and bleached oak, as well as rosewood, teak, pine, mahogany, larch, chestnut, cherry, alder, ebony.

Color newspaper vine

To make the color uniform, coloring is done very quickly - with a brush, sponge, spray or by immersion in a container with a dye. Suitable colors are chosen empirically - different paper requires different dyeing times. Dry the tubules vertically by inserting it into a jar or glass, spreading it out on a fine grid. After drying, the color changes slightly - if it is too pale, the details are painted again.

You can stain newspaper tubes with anything you like - brilliant green, iodine, hair dye, gouache, food coloring, acrylic. To make the color bright, uniform, and the newspaper text was not noticeable, the tubes are painted with white or gray paint, and later - in any suitable color.

If the stain is too dark, it is diluted with water, and when the product is planned to be made completely in the same color, without contrasting inserts, it is easier to paint the finished structure immediately.

  • the longer the rods, the larger the product will be able to produce, but so that it has a neat appearance, the tubes are harvested in advance, and do not grow in the process;
  • so that the future candy store has an even shape, they braid some container - a jar, a box, a saucepan, it is also important to maintain equal distances between the rods;
