How to organize lighting in the kitchen

Kitchen lighting

The kitchen is one of the most important, often used premises of an apartment, a private house. Here they cook, eat, relax with a cup of tea in the evening, even do homework, if there is an equipped corner. The lighting of the kitchen is not limited to a single ceiling chandelier, as it was a couple of decades ago, but it is mounted separately for each zone. It is carried out according to certain rules, the convenient location of the switches, outlets, to which the lighting devices will be connected, is thought over even at the stage of “rough” finishing of the room, before applying the finish coatings.

Basic rules of lighting in the kitchen

In every room, regardless of its purpose, when it becomes dark, artificial light is needed. The main principle of the organization of kitchen lighting is multilevel. Even in the closest kitchenette of “Khrushchev”, one chandelier in the middle of the ceiling will obviously not be enough - during cooking, washing dishes, unloading food from the refrigerator, the one working will most likely turn out to be back to the lighting device, which is very inconvenient due to the falling shadow. The corners where the dishes are, small appliances, the products are, will be practically deprived of light.

The number of fixtures is selected depending on the area of the room, its functional purpose, placement of the headset, and other furniture. In a cramped kitchenette, where cooking is exclusively done, the arrangement of light will be done differently than in a spacious room combined with a living room, which also serves as a dining room, a place for relaxation, and receiving guests.

The kitchen light also depends on the chosen interior style: brilliant metal chandeliers are suitable for hi-tech, minimalism - barely noticeable bulbs built into the suspended ceiling. Baroque will be decorated with heavy multi-track construction, country - numerous sconces in textile lampshades.

About lighting standards

Not only the convenience of any activity, but also the health of the eyes and the emotional mood of a person depend on the brightness of the lighting. When calculating the required amount of light, take into account what actions are planned to be performed in the room, how long they are. Ergonomics of lighting is also important - the room should be comfortable.

During the construction of typical residential buildings, industrial buildings, educational institutions, they are guided by the applicable norms of SNiP, SanPin. In your own kitchen, you can organize almost any lighting, guided by simple recommendations:

  • Illumination is measured in lux, that is, one lumen per square meter of space. For the kitchen, experts advise applying the norm of at least 150 lux;
  • if in the kitchen space there is a corner for working with a computer, paper documents, then this area is illuminated by about 300 lux;
  • in a recreation area where reading is supposed, the recommended light is up to 250 lux.

Norma from 150 lux General lighting with a round chandelier There is a light above each surface Bright illumination of countertops Neon light above the countertop. Several types of fixtures

Each light bulb indicates the size of the light flux that it gives, as well as the color. The number of lamps for a particular kitchen is calculated according to the tables.

Light, functional areas - the location of lighting

Whatever the size of the room, each functional area is correctly highlighted in it:

  • the upper chandelier - may be the only one in a small room (then it is hung in the center of the ceiling) or several are made - this is convenient for rooms with an asymmetric, elongated configuration, combined with the hall, etc .;
  • working area - it needs bright light sources placed directly above the table, near the sink;
  • dining area - most often lit with a sconce, ceiling lamp, height-adjustable;
  • decorative lighting - mounted inside wall cabinets with transparent doors, along the bottom, top of the headset, ceiling, baseboard.

If a room is planned for sleeping, homework, it is recommended to purchase lamps whose brightness can be changed if desired.

Organization of the general light in the kitchen

The upper, basic or general light should be distributed around the room gently, unobtrusively, but in abundance. Modern interiors suggest the presence of several homogeneous or different ceiling lights.Lamps on roof rails are also suitable as a base light - they can be turned in any direction, illuminating the places that are currently needed. The rack devices are mounted to the ceilings of the corresponding type, perfectly fitting into the high-tech style of the interiors, futuristic, minimalist design. Built-in models are perfectly mounted on suspension structures, overhead - only on a solid plane.

For large kitchens, the overhead lighting is done separately to save electricity, including only the necessary part.

Spot lighting

Spotlights can accurately complement the base chandelier or play the role of the main overhead light. They are mounted on a stretch, built into a suspended plasterboard ceiling, used with other suitable materials. LEDs do not cast shadows, are placed on the entire surface of the ceiling, walls, less often - along the floor, in random order. Using such bulbs, it is easy to correct the space of an unsuccessful shape - if the same elements are placed on one side of the elongated kitchen, it will become wider to narrow the room, the chandeliers are mounted along the middle ceiling line. To make the place seem larger, the upper and lower corners are highlighted. Separate spotlights are placed at a distance of not less than 35-45 cm, from walls - 20-25 cm.

Work area lighting

The working area is the place that is most brightly lit in the space of the kitchen. It is important to correctly highlight the countertop, on which products are cut, kneading dough, serving dishes, and other similar manipulations. Most often, lamps, a strip of LEDs, are mounted to the bottom of the hanging cabinets located above the desktop. Lighting of the gas stove, hob is carried out using bulbs built into the hood - they are usually included in the standard kit. The oven also has a small lamp inside, as does a refrigerator.

Cooking is inseparable from washing many foods, so the sink should be lighted - it is important to place the appliance so that drops of water do not fall on it. The kitchen apron made of transparent glass looks interesting, inside which LEDs are built.

The modern fashionable trend is the removal of the working area to the center of the room, which is especially true for spacious kitchens. Lighting of such an island site is carried out using elements on rails or long decorative cords.

Dining area lighting

Zoning the food intake with warm light creates an optimal atmosphere, stimulates appetite. There are several options here: about a meter above the table standing against the wall, one or two lamps are hung on the spots, a structure with a long folding bracket on a clothespin, attached to the edge of the tabletop or the nearest shelf.

For a table in the middle of the room, a great idea is a suspended ceiling chandelier. They position it so that the entire countertop is fully lit. The optimal placement height is 120-150 cm above the surface. For the comfort of the people sitting at the table, opaque, well-diffusing shades are chosen.

For an elongated long dining table, three or more identical hanging elements are used, arranged at random.

Interior lighting for kitchen cabinets

Highlighting distant corners in the lower cabinets, the facades of the upper cabinets, open shelves is made from the inside, from the depths of space. It can be flat overhead, mortise lamps, LED strip, textured imitation of candles, torches, fire.
This backlight is divided into:

  • functional - allowing you to quickly find the necessary items in the back of the cabinet, triggered when the door is opened (as in the refrigerator);
  • decorative - brightly lit cabinets will expand the space, add airiness to it. Inclusion is made manually.

To make the headset more decorative, all light sources inside it are installed behind a profile specially designed for this.

Decorative lighting

Decorative illumination is made of LED strip, which is white or color. Such elements are distinguished by paintings, wall panels, beautiful floor compositions, large potted plants, elegant porcelain figurines on a shelf, etc. For this purpose, lamps are used on clothespins - when changing the scenery, the light can be easily arranged differently. LEDs are placed under the edge of the tabletop, along the perimeter of the lower pedestals, creating the effect of "soaring" headset above the floor.

To decorate, expand the space with a window too small, light false windows are used that imitate real ones, with a beautiful landscape or imitate a fireplace, an aquarium.

Light above the bar

The bar counter can be stationary or folding, equipped with holders for bottles, glasses or without them. When you want to create an atmosphere, like in a real bar, halogen lamps that scatter light are mounted on top of the surface, which will beautifully illuminate not only the stand itself, but also the surrounding space. Lamps are mounted at the level of the holder for glasses, if it is missing, lamps on cables are suitable - it is desirable that the height of the structure can be adjusted. For a small U-shaped or U-shaped rack, usually one large lamp is sufficient.

The bar counter is often a zoning element between the kitchen and the dining room, because the lamps should be optimally suited to the style of both spaces.

Features of lighting combined rooms

Two or three or more logical zones are located in the kitchen-studio, each of which is highlighted individually, not forgetting to preserve the unified interior stylistics that was initially selected.When a clear dividing strip (piece of furniture, screen, podium, highlighting, etc.) is not planned at the border between the kitchen and the living room, it is also created with the help of light or its absence.

Lamps, chandeliers in any kitchen area are placed in such a way that the risk of touching them with your hand or head is minimal.

Kitchen-living room

The original lighting design of the kitchen, combined with the living room, with a few exceptions, it is advisable to think over, organize in advance - even before the “finish” coating is applied in the room, the furniture is arranged. Wiring for basic appliances is made completely hidden - only in some interior stylistics is the presence of a large number of wires in the most prominent places welcomed.

The kitchen-living space suggests that the room will accommodate a place for rest, sleep. Such a zone is illuminated with a floor lamp, wall sconces, clothespin. In areas related to the kitchen and belonging to the living room, the basic light is done separately.

Kitchen-dining room

The combined dining room-kitchen is a less broad concept than the living room-kitchen, since there are only spacious places for cooking and eating. Less commonly, the dining area, among other functions, is intended to receive guests, their sleep, if other suitable areas are not provided in the apartment. Because the light here is adjustable in brightness, the kitchen area is also distinguished by the level of illumination.

A table is placed in the dining room space, and the height of the lamp above it is easily changed with a flick of the wrist - up-down or switched using the remote control. As an option - a high floor lamp with a curved leg is placed on the side of a small table or "floating" lighting is mounted on special tires.

If appliances are installed, the brightness of which can be changed over a wide range, it is easy to create a bright atmosphere for a festive dinner in the room, and twilight for an intimate dinner for two.

Small kitchen lighting

The tight spaces, especially those located in the bay window (which is especially true for miniature studio apartments), do not require a large number of powerful lamps - such lighting will be excessively bright. Volumetric lamps, often located on a multi-level ceiling, are also inappropriate - they clutter up an already small area. Ideal for a small room - LED lamps built into the ceiling, miniature sconces on the walls, spot devices. To maximize the space use diffused light, the illumination of each corner and cabinet to "raise" a low ceiling, some of the lamps are directed upwards. When the ceiling is excessively high, a large, textured chandelier is suspended on a long lace.

The choice of lamps by type, light, color

For the kitchen, experts recommend lamps that mimic neutral white or warm light. The flow temperature is measured in Kelvin. Cold bluish, lifeless white lighting is permissible here only if you have a working mini-cabinet - it can cause anxiety, especially among unbalanced people, greatly distort the natural color of food, making it visually unappetizing. A warm white version will help you relax, relax with a cup of tea or with your family.

The configuration of the bulb itself can also be different: pear-shaped, candle-shaped, in the form of a tube, spiral, mushroom, spot, etc. LED lamps have the best efficiency, durability, environmental friendliness, but the prices are relatively high. The cheapest option is ordinary incandescent bulbs, the price of such a device is minimal, but the energy consumption for their power is very significant.

Lamps of various shapes

Whatever type of lamp is chosen, the light should not dazzle.

LED

LED bulbs can significantly save the budget, especially if a motion sensor is built into the lamp, which turns on if someone enters the kitchen,turning off a few minutes after any activity recorded by the mechanism is terminated. The installation of a touch system of switches will allow you to adjust the level of illumination.

Incandescent lamps

This type of lamp is used in fixtures directed to the ceiling, wall, furniture, and the reflected light is captured by the human eye. Such bulbs are very hot, because in rooms decorated in black-brown-purple tones that almost completely absorb light, their use is ineffective. In close contact with textile, plastic, paper lampshades, a high probability of fire. Conventional incandescent lamps at 40-100 watts have a light temperature of 2600-2900 K.

Incandescent lamp in the chandelier

Halogen

This type of construction is also an incandescent lamp, but a thin grade tungsten wire is used in the manufacture, the flask itself is filled with an oxygen mixture, supplemented by volatile compounds of iodine and bromine. Halogen lamps have a color temperature of 3000-3200 K, they serve much longer than incandescent, although their size is slightly smaller. It is believed that the device gives a luminous flux that is as close as possible to the natural spectrum, reducing the fatigue of the organs of vision. This type of device is divided into four types:

  • linear
  • finger;
  • with an external flask;
  • with reflector.

Bright halogen bulbs

When installing halogen lamps, specialized transformers are used, it is recommended to wear gloves to replace a burned-out device with a new one.

Halogen IRC lamps

The name of the device refers to a lamp with an infrared coating, which during production is applied to the surface of the bulb so that visible light penetrates outward, and most of the heat is reflected back. At the same time, the life of the light bulb is twice as long, and the energy consumed is much less, which allows significant financial savings.

Any halogen elements should be kept in perfect cleanliness - in places of minimal pollution the device quickly burns out and fails.

Halogen IRC lamps

Fluorescent

Such light fixtures are distinguished by a steady warm white light if their color temperature is 2700-3300 K, neutral white at 3400-4500 K, cold daylight at 4600-6500 K. They do not need a special power supply, but only plug it in after fixing in the right place. Fluorescent lamps are divided into two types:

  • having the form of long straight, semicircular, U-shaped tubes equipped with an internal ballast;
  • conventional energy-saving appliances, often equipped with a light sensor.

Both configurations are durable, economical, expensive options from the moment you turn on shine as brightly as possible, close to natural light, cheap ones distort the spectrum. A variety of design solutions allows you to choose the right appliances for the interior of any kitchen.

Lighting Features

The choice of bulbs by light temperature directly affects vision, color perception of the interior. Warm colors help to relax, cold colors perfectly tone. A device that completely simulates sunlight has not yet been created, although work in this direction has been ongoing for a long time.

Correctly organize kitchen lighting, both primary and secondary, can be with the help of lamps that give different shades of light flux. Specialists distinguish three main options:

  • warm white - 2500-3500 K;
  • neutral white, close to natural - 3600-5000 K;
  • white cold - 5100-5600 K.

For the dining area of the kitchen room, various options are acceptable: if there are long gatherings with friends, daily family dinners, warm lighting is recommended, but when the place is intended for a quick meal two to three times a day, it is better to use cold white lights.

Cold Lighting KitchenBlue backlight for the kitchen Warm kitchen lighting Mixed color lighting Fluorescent lamps The combination of cold lighting and blue
The kitchen, the space of which is combined with the living room, is usually lit with warm light, which allows you to create the most laid-back atmosphere, especially in combination with a chandelier that gently diffuses the light stream. Warm options are also recommended for interiors designed in “soft”, pastel colors - cold shades of objects here will be blurry, blue, violet, green, gray colors - slightly distorted.

Natural white leaves all the colors almost unchanged, because such devices are mounted above the kitchen work area, and if there are mirrors in the room, they are also around them, but so that the reflected light does not blind those present.

The cold white hue is similar to the pale winter sun, but is perceived by the human eye as having the highest intensity. It is most convenient to use in combination with natural light, with its lack. Accent lighting is performed cold, which allows you to highlight some elements of the decor, divide the space into zones, create a light border between the kitchen and the room adjacent to it.

Conclusion

Modern kitchen lighting is located in the most convenient way for the owners. A separate backlight is mounted in each logical zone, highlighting it, while the decorative one, on the contrary, unites the space, making it subordinate to the general idea. All lighting devices, with sufficient experience in the field of electrical work, are installed by themselves. Otherwise, specialists will come to the rescue, who will draw up a detailed project, depicting the plan in 3D format, and arrange lighting in accordance with the wishes of the customer.
