How to decorate a fireplace: tiling, artificial stone

Fireplace trim

The fireplace has always been and still remains a “status” item, symbolizing luxury and wealth. But today, many would be able to afford such a real or fake object. The correct facing of the fireplace will allow you to easily fit it into almost any interior style, creating a unique and beautiful atmosphere in the room to be designed.

Finishing Features

One of the most important requirements for the decoration of this fireplace is the fire resistance of the facing material. The design consists of a hearth (the place where the fire burns) and a portal (decorative exterior) with a chimney. The item is most often made of clinker - a special heat-resistant stove brick.

Fireplace decoration

The color of the finish also matters. When the fireplace is designed primarily to heat the room, rather than decorate it, the most dark matte tones are preferred. The more textured, embossed the surface is, the stronger the heat transfer, and therefore the higher the temperature in a room with such a stove.

Types, methods of decorating a fireplace

There are several options for finishing the portal, each of them has its positive and negative properties. Most often, the hearth is plastered with subsequent staining, lined with decorative ceramic tiles, natural or artificial stone, sheathed with metal sheets. The portal itself is often decorated with refractory glass doors, heavy cast-iron grates, steel dampers.

The closer the room, the smaller the decorative hearth becomes, the more luminous it is finished.

Plastering: advantages, disadvantages

Finishing the hearth with stucco is not a complicated or expensive process. Suitable for structures made entirely of brick, concrete. This design does not burden the object, therefore, it is not necessary to strengthen the foundation additionally. The plaster layer intended for subsequent finishing is slightly different from the decorative version.When changing the interior, the structure is easily repainted in a different color, corresponding to the color of the environment. The disadvantage of this finish is that when applying a thick layer, reinforcement is required, as well as prolonged drying.

Tiling the fireplace - pros, cons

Very often, fireplaces are faced with ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles. The latter is placed both directly on the adhesive and on metal profiles. Using porcelain stoneware, it is easy to mask uneven brickwork, chips, and other surface defects. The material is durable, resistant to frost, open fire, sudden changes in temperature, humidity, physical damage, long retains a beautiful appearance. The downside is not the lowest price.

Facing with ceramic tiles is an inexpensive option, as you can make it yourself or choose from the widest assortment now represented by most stores. In shape, it is offered square, rectangular, curly, angular, etc. The material is fireproof, environmentally friendly, and you can choose it for almost any interior style. Minus material - low impact resistance.

Artificial stone fireplace decoration - pros and cons

Artificial stone is cheaper than natural, outwardly remotely resembles it. Such material is several times lighter in weight - additional reinforcement of the foundation under it is not necessary. Frost resistance, resistance to chemicals in most species is also at altitude. Fake stone is made of gypsum, stone chips, polymers, imitates granite, marble, onyx, sandstone. The material is easy to stack with your own hand, there are flexible options for curved surfaces. Significant disadvantages - the fake stone does not have natural thermal conductivity, as well as the corresponding characteristics of strength, moisture resistance, it is more fragile.

Natural stone finish: positive, negative qualities

Real natural stone - the material is heavy, beautiful, completely natural. Such a finish always looks luxurious, it is voluminous, quite complicated in execution, but as durable as possible - the fireplace will serve more than one generation. It is permissible to install the structure even in a room that is not heated. The stone is resistant to abrasion, impact resistant, and the variety of types, shapes, colors allows you to choose it for various interior styles.

The construction device on the first floor of a private house requires a reinforced foundation underneath, on the second and subsequent products it is recommended to install it at the junction of two main walls. Another disadvantage is the high cost of the material. For facing use:

  • marble;
  • granite;
  • sandstone;
  • shell rock;
  • talchochlorite;
  • tuff;
  • limestone.

Metal plating - advantages, disadvantages

The design of the hearth by sheathing with metal sheets is suitable for many modern interior styles. The most popular finishes are stainless steel, copper and brass, the decoration technique is broaching, chasing (including manual), artistic etching, and plasma cutting. Metals are easy to combine with natural or artificial stone, plaster. The undoubted advantages of this finish are the relatively low weight of the details, the ability to design a fireplace in almost any interior style (retro, classic, high-tech, etc.) without completely rebuilding it. A freestanding building made entirely of metal is easy to connect, place anywhere in space. The main disadvantages are the probability of serious burns when touching a metal surface, uneven heating of the room, and quick cooling.

How to choose a plaster for a fireplace

To design a fireplace insert, pipe and other details, you need to choose the right plaster. The composition is often mixed on its own using the following main components:

  • clay - added for heat resistance.It is advisable to choose not too “greasy” - such a crack quickly when heating the designed structure;
  • sand - he is not afraid of high temperatures, the coating comes out as strong as possible, about twice as much as clay takes it in volume;
  • lime is an excellent plasticizer, improves adhesion to the base, facilitates the application process. It is recommended to purchase a ready-made slaked fluff or make it yourself;
  • asbestos, fiberglass - increase the density, heat resistance, coating strength. It is preferable to add up to 7-10% of natural fiberglass to the solution, asbestos is even less, since it is very toxic;
  • cement - as an astringent component, it is added no more than 50% of the total volume of the mixture, since a larger amount will lead to cracking of the surface.

If there is no experience in the preparation of multicomponent mixtures, it is better to buy a ready-made plaster composition for furnaces.

How to plaster yourself

It is not too difficult to plaster the structure yourself. It is only important to choose a special composition - fire-resistant, when heated it does not emit harmful substances into the surrounding atmosphere, does not crack under the influence of high temperatures.

How to perform plastering step by step:

  • before starting work, the walls of the structure are cleaned of contaminants, degreased, slightly heated, moisten the masonry with water;
  • then reinforcement is carried out using a special mesh so that the coating comes out as strong as possible;
  • after spraying with a liquid solution is performed - this allows you to fill the pores in the brickwork;
  • when the layer is slightly set, plastering is performed - a layer of four to six mm is applied. thick. To do this, use a trowel and a half;
  • then one or three of the same thin layers are applied, dried;
  • the coating is made with the same liquid mixture as the spray, it helps to hide the smallest defects.The plane is leveled until it hardens completely with a wooden trowel;
  • it is permissible to heat the stove after three to four days - it is unacceptable to speed up the drying process by kindling, since the coating often cracks;
  • the textured coating is made very thin - 0.3-0.7 cm, so that the finish does not burden the structure;
  • decorative plaster is rarely tinted, so you have to add the paint yourself. It is selected heat-resistant - up to +650 degrees, organosilicon enamel, which almost never crack, is best suited.

Which tile is suitable for decorating a fireplace

Key selection options:

  • impact resistance, wear resistance - directly affect the durability of the coating;
  • design - the appearance of the fireplace should match the style of the room;
  • moisture resistance - if there is water in the room (sauna, bath);
  • resistance to temperature changes - it is very important if the hearth is the only source of heating the room;
  • thickness - the larger the better, the recommended option is not thinner than eight mm;
  • porosity - it is desirable to use low porosity, since it is more durable;
  • marking tiles - the use of category "A" is more acceptable, since the dimensions of the product are as accurate as possible, the pattern is clear, which is very important when laying out complex patterns.

Terracotta

There are many types of finishing materials based on ceramic tiles:

  • terracotta - the material is strong and durable, frost-resistant and vapor-proof. The tile does not crack upon impact, practically does not scratch, is suitable for damp, heated and unheated rooms, is attached to any surface. The fireplace, decorated with terracotta tiles, warms longer than others, the coating tolerates sharp temperature changes;
  • tiles - are used for highly artistic furnaces, most often covered with glaze, almost any pattern is applied.The heat transfer of the product is high, it is easy to care for it, but the cost of the material is high;
  • porcelain tile - combines the best properties of granite and ceramics, is resistant to temperature extremes, does not crack, does not grow moldy, does not fade in the sun, is offered in various color options;
  • clinker tile - made from several grades of clay, with the addition of fireclay powder. The thickness of the material is 9-13 mm, it can be easily mounted with hot-melt adhesive, but when designing a summer kitchen, the latter is chosen frost-resistant. Clinker tiles are non-porous, wear-resistant, impact resistant;
  • majolica - has been used since ancient times, in composition it is an improved terracotta, with a pattern applied to it, covered with a transparent glaze. The price of the material is high,
  • tile - heat-resistant, tolerates temperature extremes, but in frost the material quickly deteriorates, crumbles. For fireplaces, matte options are preferred - they do not crack. Stacking is carried out using heat-resistant compounds or without glue - in a metal frame;
  • fireclay tiles - made of stone flour and refractory clay, has acid resistance, fire resistance, tolerates very low temperatures, does not rub off.

DIY tile mounting technology

For self-laying, a special composition is acquired - tiled glue. On the underside of the tiles there are usually special notches that increase the adhesion of the parts to the base. The design is recommended to be reinforced with a coarse-mesh reinforcing mesh fixed to self-tapping screws or nails. Next, the grid is covered with a mixture of sand, clay, cement of high grades, with the addition of polymers. The joints are grouted so that they are even; when laying, special plastic crosses are used. The evenness of the coating is checked by level and plumb.

The choice of artificial stone for decoration

Artificial stone is made of gypsum, synthetic materials, most often with the addition of stone chips. Some of its species are indistinguishable from the present. High-quality design is obtained with the right choice of materials.

The main criteria:

  • price - a good stone is never excessively cheap, but foreign products are always much more expensive than domestic;
  • goods used for decoration of residential premises must have a certificate of conformity and hygienic, not contain harmful components;
  • the longer the manufacturing company exists, the more likely it is to produce quality material;
  • the stone should not be too porous - this affects the strength, the service life of the decoration elements;
  • the manufacturer’s logo must be indicated on the packaging, the production date is also important - the optimum strength of the artificial stone is gained after 28-30 days from the date of manufacture. If the period is less - the product is of poor quality, it is better to refuse to purchase it.

Features of working with artificial stone when decorating a fireplace

Making a hearth with a fake stone has a number of features:

  • work is performed at a temperature of at least +6 degrees;
  • it is important to use a suitable adhesive recommended by the manufacturer;
  • for cutting use a hacksaw for metal;
  • the surface of the product is cleaned, a reinforcing mesh is installed on it;
  • then plaster is applied to the mesh, the layer thickness is 0.9-1.5 cm, dried;
  • facing is made from top to bottom so that the parts do not get dirty;
  • a thick layer of solution is applied to each part with a trowel, pressed to the place to be formed, excess glue is removed;
  • it is advisable to use long and short parts in turn, adjusting them with a hacksaw, nippers;
  • all seams are filled with a solution, dried, remove excess;
  • after complete drying, the structure is covered with hydrophobic compounds, to increase the service life of the coating.

Choosing a natural stone for a fireplace

Facing with real stone involves a wide variety of materials. For work, marble and travertine, sandstone and granite, tuff and limestone are suitable. When choosing the appropriate option, it should be remembered that smooth materials are less in need of care, cleaning from pollution. Stones such as granite and marble have a solid weight, which will require a very solid foundation under the fireplace. It is equally important that the chosen decor fits well into the interior.

Sandstone

Properties of different stones:

  • sandstone - layered, has a wide color gamut (from red-pink to dark gray), changes color when the light changes, is resistant to temperature extremes;
  • slate - it is red, yellow, green, brown, black, etc., is relatively expensive, requires periodic treatment with dirt-repellent mixtures;
  • travertine - usually a yellowish-gray color, porous, not too dense, therefore, to improve its properties, it is coated with special compounds;
  • granite - the most durable, reliable, durable, resistant to shock, chemicals, temperature extremes. The color scheme is from white-gray to almost black, from pale yellow to maroon. The price is very high, but the appearance is strict, solid;
  • marble - looks luxurious, expensive. Coloring - white, gray, black, motley. The material easily tolerates temperature extremes, physical effects, but it is not resistant to aggressive chemicals, household dyes, therefore it needs a special coating;
  • onyx is a semiprecious stone whose presence in the room makes it unique. The material perfectly transmits light, it is yellow, green, orange, brown, resistant to high and low temperatures, but chemicals are harmful to it, and the cost is about three times more than that of other stones.

Rules for working with marble, other natural stone

Work with real stone, whether marble, granite, sandstone or others, is labor intensive.Each tile will have to be carefully sized, selected according to tone. For work, special grinding machines, stone-cutting devices will be required.

Stacking Procedure:

  • the surface of the stove is cleaned of contaminants, a reinforcing mesh is mounted;
  • facing elements are adjusted so that all tiles are of the same size, shade, thickness;
  • laying begins with the largest parts, fixed with tile glue;
  • culling, if necessary, is used in inconspicuous places;
  • so as not to confuse the location of the individual tiles, they are marked on the reverse side;
  • it is desirable to add compounds to the glue that increase its elasticity, the material should not fall on the front side of the tiles;
  • work starts from the lower left corner, following the order: from left to right, from bottom to top;
  • for tiles with a thickness of more than 10 mm, additional wire reinforcement is used;
  • the seams are overwritten two days after installation, being careful not to stain the material with grout.

Stylistic areas in the decoration of the fireplace

Stoves of various types are built into very different interiors. It is important to observe the integrity of the interior, to select an acceptable color scheme. The fireplace is often a zoning part, which allows you to accurately divide the spacious room into two functional parts. Most often, fireplaces are built into the interiors of classicism, baroque, loft, provence, country.

Stylistic fireplace

In english style

The hearth in the English style is made U-shaped, equipping with a large firebox, wide mantelpiece. Suitable finishing materials are valuable wood species (wenge, zebrano, bog oak, Karelian birch, etc.) or their high-quality imitation, ceramic tiles, metal (forged elements). Most of the lines here are straight, the corners are strictly straight, all the details have a strict regular shape.

Provence style

Provence fireplace has the simplest form, but every detail is worked out as much as possible.The construction color is usually white, other suitable colors are pastel, cream, pale pink, bluish, pale green. As a material, decorative plaster, ceramic tiles with floral patterns, light woods, including painted, artificially aged, are suitable. Forging will also have to be in place.

Country style

Country - a style associated with rustic simplicity and comfort, because the fireplace here is finished "modestly, but with taste." This design is heavy, very voluminous, because self-finishing is very time-consuming. The portal itself is made D-shaped, above the firebox there is a thick beam, most often a stone. Artificial aged natural stone (shell rock, sandstone), brickwork, imitation of stone, brick are suitable for decoration.

In classic style

Classics are usually associated with harmony, symmetry, correct geometry, both of the object itself and of the entire room where it is located. A few stucco elements are acceptable here - moldings, sockets, half columns, pilasters, corner pieces and more. Forging, ceramic tiles made in light colors with unobtrusive decor, including imitating wood, is also acceptable.

Hi-tech style

The fireplace in high-tech style is necessarily smooth, shiny. Rarely it is located against the wall - usually these are island, suspended, rotating structures located in the corner. The main finishing materials are metal, glass (refractory, transparent, patterned, partially tinted, etc.).

High-tech fireplace

Refractory glasses are characterized by high heat dissipation, therefore they are used in structures designed specifically for heating.

Ethnic style

Ethnic fireplaces - motley oriental and strict European designs. Less commonly, this is an imitation of the “Russian stove” inscribed in the corresponding interior. Popular finishes include decorative stucco, chalk whitewashing, clay mixed with various dyes, and mosaics of colored ceramic tiles. The patterns here are completely absent, or are the most sinuous, multi-color.

Loft style

The loft hearth is always made out "antique", finished with brick, stone, dark metal, rough wood, less often - plaster, stucco. The structure is usually placed near the wall, but island, suspended options are acceptable, the shape is rectangular, round, in the form of a barrel, etc. The chimney here is not masked, but made accented. Also, the hearth may resemble a slightly modernized "stove-potbelly stove" located in an empty niche.

Trim options for raised fireplaces

Not every private mansion will be able to equip a real fireplace, in a city apartment for its installation you will have to visit several instances, draw up a project, and with a high probability of receiving a refusal. Therefore, where it is impossible to create a real hearth, they create a false portal. Fire in it is drawn or from a fabric set in motion by air, which is sometimes accompanied by the sound of crackling firewood.

Artificial fireplaces are made one-sided, three-sided, less often - viewed from all four sides. They distinguish wall, angular (convex and concave), island pseudo-foci in appearance, square, cylindrical, "pyramids" in shape.

Trim Fireplace

Finishing this design is simpler than real - the false fireplace does not heat up, is completely fireproof, because the requirements for decoration relate primarily to the appearance of the product. The portal is decorated with drywall, wood, different types of ceramics, stone.

Conclusion

Decorating a fireplace, a real or a fake stove in the country, in a country house is permissible using both artificial and natural materials. Decorating the product portal is allowed in almost any way using the most fireproof decorations. Making is done by hand or by inviting professional finishers.
