How to make a do-it-yourself rack

DIY shelving

The shelving unit is a convenient, practical and multifunctional furniture design. It does not take up much space and at the same time has an impressive capacity. Open shelves avoid clutter and crowding. They do not interfere with the penetration of light into the room and the free circulation of air. Due to the lack of opening doors, shelving helps save space and, if necessary, competently zone the space. Especially popular in this sense are options that do not have a back wall, which do not obscure the enclosed part of the room.

The design of this product is not complicated, so if you wish, it is quite possible to build a rack with your own hands. The benefits of a homemade storage system are that it saves money. When developing, you can take into account the dimensions of the space allotted for it and the needs of the future owner.

Varieties of shelving

There are many shelving options. The choice of future design depends on:

  • places of its deployment - in the kitchen, bedroom, pantry, living room, nursery;
  • destinations - for books, flower pots, toys, decor, stationery, blanks. Filling directly affects the choice of material and the dimensions of the shelves;
  • placement - along the wall, on the wall, in the middle of the room as a partition.

Frame rack

By design, the following types of shelving can be distinguished:

  • frame - the basis is a wooden or metal frame on which the shelves are attached;
  • beam - are similar in design to the previous ones, but have a more thorough skeleton;
  • modular - consist of separate modules, the location of which can be changed at your discretion;
  • cantilever - shelves are attached only to the rear wall, sidewalls are absent. There is a feeling of increased free space;
  • rope - ropes are used to fasten horizontal surfaces. The shelves are held at the correct height using the limiting nodes. The back and side walls are absent;
  • A-shaped racks are the basis of the bridge circuit. Shelves are attached to the side elements connected at an angle;
  • angular - are simply necessary in conditions of limited space, when the room does not indulge in dimensions and every centimeter is important.Corner racks help to correct the shortcomings of the existing layout, place the maximum number of things, rationally use the corners in the room. They are indispensable in narrow, elongated walk-in closets. They help to solve the problem of storage on balconies when it is impossible to build in a rectangular cabinet, since its end will abut against a double-glazed window;
  • a rotating rack in the shape of a cylinder is an interesting model, which is more often used at exhibitions and in trading floors than in the interior of apartments;
  • built-in - for their construction, a niche of suitable sizes is needed. Shelves are attached to the side walls. The material for the shelves is wood, chipboard, plastic, glass.

By location:

  1. Stationary - differ in solidity, for transportation they will have to be disassembled into separate components.
  2. Mobile - made of lightweight materials, often equipped with wheels, which makes them possible to move.
  3. Mounted - their advantage in compactness. Shelves mounted on the wall allow you to organize storage of things without taking up space on the floor. Actual for small areas.

Options for the use of shelving in the interior

Shelving is an incredibly practical structure that will be appropriate in any room, regardless of its purpose.

Kitchen shelving

During cooking, it is often necessary to quickly take the necessary spices, dishes, and recipe books from the shelf. From the shelves of the rack you can get everything you need in a second and just as quickly arrange the used items in their places. The absence of the need to open the doors, pull out the drawers significantly saves time and effort of the hostess.

Kitchen shelving

The shelving in the kitchen is a great place to store homemade workpieces, it is able to partially replace the pantry. But it must be remembered that a similar design will have to withstand the considerable weight of cans with pickled vegetables and jam.This must be taken into account when designing the system and choosing materials for its manufacture.

Chandelier above the table

Open surfaces are an ideal place to place decorative elements that adorn the kitchen and create coziness. Stylish jars with cereals, coffee, candied fruit, flower arrangements, fruit vases, figurines fill the kitchen space with life, make it complete.

Shelves in the work area

Shelving in the living room

In the living room, shelving more often performs a decorative function. They place a variety of accessories - souvenirs, designer creations, candles, figurines, photo frames. Such a system can be made of wood, glass, drywall.

Shelving in the living room

If necessary, the library can be accommodated in the common room. For a bookcase, a stationary design with strong supporting elements and wooden shelves of the required length and thickness is suitable. Books have serious weight, and improperly selected materials can cause sagging shelves and even destruction of the structure.

A table between the seats

The living room is the largest room, relative to the other rooms in the house. Therefore, it often successfully allocates additional functional zones - a kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom, an office. And one of the most popular types of partitions is the rack. It can be either completely open - not have a back and front wall, or closed on one side. The design with glass shelves and walls will look great. It does not interfere with the passage of light, looks weightless and incredibly stylish and at the same time allows you to completely isolate individual zones.

Shelving in the room

Open racks in the bedroom are used to store personal items, a variety of decorative accessories, useful trifles. Complementing the design with baskets and boxes, you can significantly increase the usable area and improve the functionality of furniture.

Shelving in the bedroom

Shelving in the bedroom is often located along one of the walls, integrating a television or audio system into it.An interesting option is to put the bed so that its head becomes the center of the composition of the storage system. A good solution for elongated rooms is to build a shelf along the short wall on which the window is located. This will visually make the room more square and will not occupy the already narrow space along the long walls.

Ceiling fan

Using the rack, you can separate the working area. For this purpose, it is advisable to choose a design with a blank wall so that the light from the makeshift cabinet does not interfere with a sleeping family member. For papers and documents, you can place a hinged option. If space allows, install a full-fledged stationary system in the center of which the desktop will be located. It conveniently accommodates office equipment and everything necessary for fruitful work.

Shelving in the nursery

Kavardak, which is usually present in the nursery, is a headache for almost every mother. It is very difficult to maintain order if there is no convenient place for storage in the child’s room. Unfolding toys in cabinets and drawers takes a lot of time. An excellent way out is to install a rack with capacious baskets. These beautiful products also perform a decorative function. From now on, all that needs to be done is to walk around the room with the basket, collect toys into it and send it to the shelf.

Rack in the nursery

The advantages of using shelving in the nursery are that they:

  • take up much less space compared to stationary cabinets, and this is very important for small rooms;
  • do not need additional space for opening doors and sliding drawers;
  • do not require expensive facades and accessories;
  • unlike cabinets with doors, they do not require replacement of hinges, closers, Push To Open opening systems, etc.
  • much easier to manufacture.

Cellar and garage racks

In utility rooms, shelving equipment is more than justified.The main argument is their large capacity, easy access to items placed on them, and high load-bearing characteristics.

Cellar shelving

The cellar is a traditional place for storing stocks of vegetables, home-made vegetables, mushrooms, sausages, smoked products, home-made alcohol - wine, liquors and more. The dimensions of the rack for this room depend on its dimensions and the number of products that are planned to be placed here. The thickness of the shelves should be sufficient to support the weight of heavy cans and baskets.

Wine on the shelves

In the garage, the structure can be placed along one of the walls. It is necessary to carefully consider the dimensions of the rack to fit your needs. You will need both high shelves, for example, for a spare set of rubber, and small ones for tools and small parts. Since in the garage, in addition to car accessories, everything that does not fit in the apartment is often stored — skis, sledges, rubber boats, beach umbrellas, picnic tables and chairs, sun loungers, the remains of building materials, paint cans, you need to provide a place for their storage. Often, the garage also serves as a pantry for homework. For cans with preservation, it is better to allocate a separate whatnot.

Shelf Materials

The choice of material for the rack is determined by the following items:

  • what room will it be located in;
  • what they plan to place on it;
  • cost.

Tree

What materials can be used?

  1. Wood - resistant to high loads, suitable for any room, fits into any interior.
  2. Metal - withstand significant loads, are especially popular in household and storage rooms, but are just as often used in home interiors - for storing books, flower pots, food, shoes, tools.
  3. Drywall is an inexpensive shelving option. It is made on the basis of a frame from a metal profile. It requires finishing - puttying and painting or facing with ceramic tiles, mosaics.In humid rooms - the kitchen and the bathroom, it is permissible to use only a moisture-resistant version of the material. Gypsocraton is perfect for garage equipment, a workshop.

Drywall is a fragile material, so do not place too heavy objects on it. This can lead to deformation and structural failure.

Do-it-yourself wood shelving

Wooden storage systems are suitable for placing a wide variety of items and fit perfectly into the design of any room. Do-it-yourself assembly of such a structure is a perfectly feasible project, subject to the availability of all necessary tools and materials.

Wooden shelving

Tools and materials

In the manufacture of wooden shelving, the basic material must be carefully selected. Strong, strong and solid wood is suitable for this. It is better not to use sheet wood-containing materials, due to the lack of strength and durability of the latter. It is best to take pine, oak and other valuable species for such purposes. Boards should be prepared - treated with an antiseptic solution and left for several days to soak and dry.

The wood must be thoroughly dried - its moisture content should not exceed 12%. Otherwise, when dried, the tree may "lead".

What else is needed to build a wooden shelving?

  • shelf mounts;
  • metal corners;
  • furniture legs or castors - preferably metal;
  • wooden blocks;
  • wood glue;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • varnish or paint for finishing.

Instruments:

  • electric drill;
  • drills of necessary calibers;
  • hammer;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • grinding machine;
  • level, tape measure, simple pencil.

Project and drawing

The design of the rack begins with measuring the location for its installation. If it is planned to manufacture an integrated structure, it is necessary to find out the height of the wall from floor to ceiling and the width of the niche.The dimensions of the shelves depend on the weight and size of the items that will be stored on them. For small accessories, souvenirs, toys, long shelves up to 1.5 meters are perfect. For heavy cans with preservation, seedlings, their length should not exceed 90 cm. Otherwise, deflection can occur. The width depends on the size of the stored items. For books or cans, 25-40 cm is enough. For large instruments, this parameter is calculated taking into account their dimensions + 10-15 cm for convenient placement. Next, a detailed drawing of the future product is made taking into account all parameters.

Shelf drawing

Material cut and assembly

Sawing of the necessary parts is carried out in accordance with the drawing for the given dimensions. The assembly reads from below. For the lower shelf, you need to choose the thickest board, for which you can use 3 cm self-tapping screws. The long shelf must be strengthened from below using wooden blocks and slats. They will serve as additional stiffeners.

Next, the side walls are fixed, which can be made of both boards and thick plywood. On the sidewalls from the inside, the places of fixation of the shelves are noted. The most common intervals are 21 or 42 cm. With the competent alternation of these parameters, a convenient, aesthetic and functional cabinet is obtained.

The next step is to cut the shelves to the given sizes. The thickness of these parts should be at least 2.5 cm. If desired, they can be strengthened by fixing several wooden blocks on the underside.

If necessary, the back wall is cut out of plywood. This step is optional. If the wall, which will have a rack, arranges with its appearance, you can do without this detail.

Rack assembly:

  1. The rear wall is attached to the lower shelf using small studs.
  2. Holders for future shelves are mounted on the sides. If you plan to attach them with screws on the outside, this step is omitted.
  3. The side parts are connected to the lower shelf using a corner and screws.
  4. Shelves are mounted on the holders or fixed with screws. In the latter case, an assistant is needed who will hold the shelf while the collector screws in the fasteners.

It is necessary to coat the holes after drilling with glue. This will provide greater strength and reliability of the structure.

Product Decor

Decoration of wooden shelves comes down to processing them with varnish or paint. Previously, you can cover the product with linseed oil, paint it with a stain in any color suitable for a particular interior.

If chipboard or chipboard was used for the manufacture of shelves, you will need a special melamine tape for edge processing. A strip of this material is superimposed on the peeled end and glued with a hot iron. The product takes on a factory look.

Features of the assembly of the rack from a metal profile

Metal products are more durable than wood. They withstand significant loads, are not subject to burning, the effects of fungus, bark beetles, do not rot. Shelves made of metal profile are optimal for a large number of items.
The most popular type of such a structure is a structure with a metal profile frame, equipped with wooden shelves, corrugated metal sheets, chipboard or chipboard.

When designing a rack, the following points must be considered:

  • weight of items to be placed on shelves;
  • the length of the structure should be less than the length of the wall by 15 cm;
  • in height it is made to the ceiling or in profile size;
  • the width of the shelves should not exceed 100 cm;
  • the height of the shelves is determined depending on the height of the items that will be stored - 30-50 cm;
  • the height of the lower shelves is always greater.

Metal profile shelving

For the manufacture of racks, a metal profile of 3.5 cm or a profiled pipe of 2.5 cm is used. For the frame under the shelves, a profile with perforation of 5x2.5 cm is suitable;

Stages of the frame construction:

  • We measure the profile sections of the desired length and cut them off with the help of a grinder. For an additional fee, you can order cutting of the material in the store where it was bought.
  • We connect the frame elements to each other using welding or special bolts.

During the assembly process, be sure to use the building level for inspection. Subsequently, the curvature of the metal frame will be extremely difficult to fix.

  • We assemble the frame for the shelves.
  • We connect it to the profile racks, having previously accurately noted the mounting points.
  • We apply a corrosion protection agent to the assembled structure, primer the surface and paint it in the desired color.
  • We prepare the shelves - cut them to size and fix them on the frame. Wooden shelves must first be treated with drying oil, painted and dried thoroughly.
  • For greater stability, we fasten the rack to the wall and to the ceiling using anchors, brackets, struts.

Rack of old water pipes

An unexpected solution is the use of water pipes in the manufacture of shelving. Nevertheless, this technique is very popular. Most often, pipes act as components of racks and shelf holders. Individual sections of the pipe are assembled as a constructor using adapters in a variety of formations. There are known options for designer shelving, when objects - books, shoes, accessories, household chemicals are placed directly on the pipes themselves. The advantage of this material is its strength, so do not rush to get rid of the old water supply. Better give him the opportunity to serve you in a new capacity. This design is perfect for a garage or pantry. With no less success, it will fit into a modern industrial interior.

Installation of a drywall rack

Drywall allows you to create unique designs of various forms, designed for the goals and objectives of the future owner.At the same time, the cost of such a design will not cause irreparable damage to your budget.

Design and Layout

The first thing to do is create a sketch of the future design. After that, a drawing is developed indicating all sizes. It is necessary to consider the dimensions of the shelves, their functionality and location, the required load. To reproduce complex curved shapes, it is necessary to develop special patterns.

It is necessary to determine in advance the filling of the rack. If light individual accessories are located on it, there will be enough light, almost air shelves. The support in this case will be the drywall itself, and the profile will carry a purely symbolic function.

If you want to create a stable design to accommodate a TV, music system and other heavy objects, the main task will be performed by the profile. Drywall will perform a purely decorative function.

The third option is an intermediate one, when each cell is assigned a specific role. On some, it is supposed to place heavy equipment, on others, light decor.

The markup is transferred from the diagram to the walls using a square, tape measure. It is necessary to control the correctness of marking using the building level.

Surface preparation

Preparing the wall before installing the drywall rack is reduced to the following actions:

  • surface cleansing from old wallpaper, plaster;
  • greasing of cracks, cracks;
  • processing the wall with an antiseptic composition.

Surface finish

Frame assembly

The assembly principle may vary depending on the type of construction. In one case, the built-in structure is mounted on the wall, in the other, it is assembled separately and is already fixed in place using self-tapping screws.

Stages of manufacturing the frame directly at the location of the future rack:

  • guides are mounted on the wall with dowels;
  • guides are symmetrically located on the floor and ceiling;
  • in the resulting basis, with the help of self-tapping screws, the racks are fixed;
  • On vertical supports, racks cut to size for shelves are fixed.

Assembling the frame

Drywall

The prepared structure is sheathed with drywall parts cut to a given size. Fasteners are arranged with an interval of 12-15 cm. First of all, the side parts of the future rack are closed, and then the shelves themselves. Corners should be protected with metal corners, which are fastened with self-tapping screws.

We plasterboard

Finish finish

In order to exclude further the appearance of cracks, all corners of the structure are putty and reinforced with building mesh. Putty is applied in several layers, each of which must be allowed to dry well. Next, the surface should be treated with sandpaper. This will help make it perfectly flat and smooth. The next step is the application of a primer, with the aim of increasing adhesion, strengthening and bonding the loose base and reducing paint consumption. The primer is thoroughly mixed and applied to the surface with a brush. The final step is staining.

Putty

Independent manufacture of the rack allows you to save money and get a product that fully meets the needs of the owner.
