Wall mounts: brackets, corners, hidden hinges

Shelf mount

The use of shelves for storing plants, decor, books and souvenirs is an excellent option for styling the interior. Such an element will also be useful in the kitchen, bathroom, home workshop or garage. Practical products will help to conveniently store personal items or tools, dishes, cosmetics. But to guarantee the reliability of the installed shelf will help only the correct selection of fasteners. There are a variety of wall mounts that differ in their mounting method. Fasteners of different characteristics can be universal or used only for shelves made of a specific material. Our helpful descriptions will help you choose the right type of shelf mount. Below we talked about how the material, the design of the shelves, as well as the material of the walls being equipped, affects the choice of fasteners.

Types of Mounts

Conventionally, the shelf holders are divided into two large groups: visible fasteners and hidden fasteners. The first type often has an original look, complemented by wrought iron elements or other decor. Also visible fasteners may have a minimalist design. As for the hidden holders, they are optimally suited for wooden shelves. Due to the invisible fastening, the impression will be that the shelf is simply glued to the wall. However, she will be able to withstand heavy loads. For shelves made of other materials (for example, metal), hidden fastenings are rarely used.

There is a special type of shelf holders: long side bars in the shape of a parallelepiped mounted on a wall. Shelves are fixed (inserted) between the slats. Side holders are suitable for making a stylish hanging rack.

Hidden

You can hang shelves in the house so that the fasteners remain invisible and do not violate the attractiveness of the mounted element. There are various fasteners for flush mounting:

  • Flat loops.

They are fixed on the shelf with nails or glued to light products. To hang the shelf, screws are screwed into the wall under the installed hinges. Then the loops are put on the protruding heads of the screws.

Flat hinges

  • Metal shelf holders-pins.

They are a long part, recessed into the wall, and a short front part, which is inserted into the shelf. Initially, the corresponding holes are prepared under the pins on the wall and in the product. Sometimes steel threaded rods are used instead of conventional shelf holders.

Brackets, fasteners, corners and hinges

Visible shelf mounts are made of metal and plastic (may have a metal base). The following visible shelf holders are distinguished:

  • Brackets.

According to the purpose and the expected load on the product, the used brackets can be in the form of small shelf holders with a prepared hole for installing the shelf (for example, pelicans). For heavy hinged products, T-shaped fasteners are used.

Bracket

  • Corners.

Furniture corners are mounted from underneath to a shelf, and are also mounted on the wall itself. They can be L-shaped fasteners or a curved, decorated arc.

A corner

  • Hinges.

Furniture hinges for spacious shelves are only slightly visible above the products. Unlike thin analogs, for flush mounting they have a greater thickness, are able to withstand a large load.

Choice and methods of fastening

Types of fastening shelves from different materials are significantly different. For example, glass or plastic shelves are quite fragile, and when installed on a flush mounting, they can be damaged. Also, the choice of suitable holders is affected by the weight of the shelves, the things that will be placed on them. For heavy souvenirs, numerous books, you need to install the most reliable mounts. Otherwise, it will not be possible to guarantee the integrity of the shelf or the strength of the fixation. When selecting holders, the specifics of the fastened product should be taken into account. For corner and non-standard figured shelves (for example, consisting of numerous frames), mounts are selected that will reliably support their individual parts. Particular attention should be paid to the evenness of the fixtures. Even a slight horizontal skew will lead to an uneven load on the product.

Wall shelf

Wooden

Due to the convenience of working with wood, wooden shelves are suspended on any mounts. The most popular option are the corners and brackets. They are ideal, given the fact that even a small board will have a lot of weight.In addition to the classic options, there is a special hidden method of fastening wooden shelves with an auxiliary beam (not a rail!). It is stuffed at the installation site of the interior element and acts as a support (base). The shelf itself, from the inside or from underneath, is fixed to the beam. As regards shelves made of derived wood materials (MDF, chipboard), it is recommended to hang them on brackets, hinges or corners. The use of hidden metal rods installed inside the shelf used will lead to the rapid destruction of compressed raw materials.

Glass

For glass shelves, plastic or metal fasteners with plastic, rubberized inserts are used. Most often they hang glass products on the following holders:

  • pelican mounts;

Plastic fasteners include a small top and a wide bottom. Interconnected by a short vertical bar. One-piece pelican mounts are mounted on the wall, glass is inserted between their upper and lower parts.

  • corner with rubber spacer;

A corner is mounted on the wall, and the glass shelf is screwed to its rubberized spacer.

  • shelf holder with suction cup.

It is used to fix the glass shelf in the cabinet, but is also suitable for mounting the product on the wall. A long mount (it is advisable to choose models with 2-3 suction cups) is mounted to the wall with dowels. Glass is attached to the suction cups of the holder.

Glass shelf

Corner

Due to the unusual location, corner models are mounted on special fasteners. So, for a single shelf, small corners or brackets are used. This method of fastening is also suitable for a significant distance of individual shelves from each other. In the bathroom, chrome or plastic shelves can be fixed using suction cups. The non-standard option is attractive due to its ease of implementation: the owner does not need to use an auxiliary tool to carry out the work.Another way to fix corner shelves is to use common vertical bars. The shelf holders are mounted with dowels on adjacent walls. And directly on the side planks the shelves themselves are installed. To do this, the vertical bars are complemented by special protrusions.

Corner shelf

Metal

To properly fix a metal shelf, you must first determine its purpose. Forged items installed in hallways for storing hats are fastened with hinges. Light metal shelves for cosmetics in the bathroom are fixed on hinges, suction cups. If an unusual metal shelf will be used to store books or potted plants, then it can be attached using loops or corners. Installation of products in workshops, garages is carried out using durable metal brackets. The brackets themselves should be mounted on anchors recessed into the wall of brick, concrete or foam block. Otherwise, it will not work to guarantee that the selected fasteners can withstand heavy weight.

Metal shelf

Plastic

It is customary to hang plastic shelves on brackets or metal and plastic corners. Initially, shelves made of plastic have special holes for fasteners, which eliminates the need for their own drilling. After screwing the plastic shelf to the installed mount, you can use various kinds of plugs. They will close the screw head. Another type of fasteners used for plastic shelves are pelicans and similar fastenings made of plastic and metal. The shelf holders are mounted on the wall, and the shelves themselves are inserted inside the recesses allocated for their installation. The advantage of this installation method is the ease of doing it yourself. But when using curly corners or decorated brackets, you can emphasize the design of the installed shelf, and complement the interior in an original way.

Step-by-Step Guide to Attaching Wall Mounts

Before attaching fasteners to the wall under the shelf, you need to correctly select the holders and auxiliary tools. For example, for a wall of brick, cinder block, aerated concrete, both dowels and anchors are used. Strong walls can withstand significant loads and will not collapse or deform due to a suspended heavy shelf. On the concrete or brick wall, you can hang any shelves in shape and material. They are also allowed to load with various objects: from books and encyclopedias to all kinds of ceramic, metal figurines. Plaster walls will not be able to withstand heavy objects. It is better to attach small bookshelves or shelves with light decor and decoration to them. Regardless of the wall materials, the installation of fasteners is carried out according to the general scheme:

  1. Marking the mounting locations of the holders.
  2. Mounting mounts for shelf holders.
  3. Installation of shelf holders.
  4. Shelf installation.

Materials and Tools

Depending on the selected shelves, mounts for them and the features of the wall itself, the installation of interior decor will be carried out in different ways. To mount the shelves to the wall, you may need the following tools and materials:

  • nails and a hammer (will help fix small shelves for flower pots or light decor);
  • screws (provide reliable fixation of shelves of average weight);
  • dowels (suitable for installing bookshelves or shelves for a variety of souvenirs);
  • anchors (will allow to securely fix multi-level wall racks or shelves with a large weight);
  • a screwdriver, drill, punch (used to fasten screws or workpieces in the wall of holes for dowels);
  • level and pencil (allow to correctly mark the installation location of the fasteners);
  • selected mounts (visible or hidden);
  • caps for screws or nails (if their hats are visible on the shelf and must be hidden).

How to fix the holder without visible mounting

Mount a mounted wooden shelf using hidden shelf holders under the power of each owner. It is attached as follows:

  1. Under the level, evenly mark the places for metal pins (the diameter of the pins should be at least 10-12 mm).
  2. Mark the places for fastenings on the shelf. The distance between the fasteners on the wall and the shelf should be the same!
  3. Drill holes for fasteners in the wall.
  4. Install fasteners. Additionally, they can be fixed in the holes with liquid nails (but then it will be very difficult to remove them from the wall).
  5. Drill appropriate holes in the shelf.
  6. Attach the shelf to previously mounted shelf holders.

DIY glass shelf fasteners: features

To simplify the installation of glass shelves located one above the other, the use of vertical shelf holders will help. They are complemented by perpendicular supports and stops. Such fasteners can withstand heavy weight, eliminate the risk of glass displacement. Fasteners may look like full rails. Fixing them to the wall is pretty easy. The following scheme will help you do this:

  1. Mark the location of the fixtures under the vertical slats (mounted on 3-4 dowels).
  2. Drilling holes for installing dowels (if a tile is drilled - use a special drill with diamond coating).
  3. Installation of dowels.
  4. Installation of vertical shelf supports.
  5. Installation of glass shelves.

Fasteners for hanging shelves on a drywall

Since drywall is a fragile material, it is necessary to fix the shelves on it with special fasteners. Butterfly dowels (also called umbrellas, umbrellas, molly) open during installation in the wall, creating a strong emphasis. They are ideal for hanging lightweight plastic or wooden shelves. True, for reliable fixation of fasteners, you should use screws that are 1-1.5 cm longer than the dowel itself.Installation work is carried out as follows:

  1. Under the level, the places of fastening of shelves are marked.
  2. We drill holes for the dowel butterfly.
  3. Installation of dowels is being carried out.
  4. Fixed corners, brackets.
  5. The shelf itself is being installed.

It is not recommended to attach heavy shelves to drywall. Due to the large weight of the products, the drywall sheet will begin to deform and collapse over time.

Custom mounting solutions

In addition to the classic fasteners for shelves, completely unusual holders can be used in the work. They will help to diversify the interior, give it a twist. The most original shelf mount options include:

  • leather belts;

For the manufacture of holders from leather belts, two large loops are made, which are put on the shelf on the left and right. A metal ring is installed at the top of the doubled edges of the loop. Installed rings are thrown on the screws mounted on the wall.

Shelf on belts

  • ropes;

For this option, you will need to drill a hole in each shelf on the left and right. Shelves are strung on ropes. Each shelf is fixed on a specific section of the rope by tying it under a wooden plank in a knot. Above the upper flange, the rope is tied into a knot, fixed on a screw.

Shelf on the ropes

  • chain;

Suspension of shelves on chains is carried out according to a similar pattern with fixation on leather belts. The only difference will be the use of chains of different lengths (the front will be longer than the back). Also, the chains themselves will be attached to the shelves, and not just frame them.

Shelf on chains

  • wooden beam (with a cross section of 5x5 cm).

Initially, hidden fasteners are fixed on the wall. In the pieces of the timber, holes are drilled for stringing the timber onto the wall fasteners. Under one shelf, you can mount 2-4 pieces of timber.

Conclusion

To carry out high-quality installation of shelves in a room, kitchen, bathroom is not difficult with knowledge of all the nuances. First of all, the material and weight of the selected product are taken into account.According to its characteristics, the optimal installation method is selected: hidden or visible. So, for wardrobe shelves, you can use any mounts. And for stylized elements, if possible, invisible fasteners should be used. It is important, when selecting wall mounts, to consider its material and bearing capacity. The specifics of installing screws or dowels in wooden, brick, plasterboard walls is somewhat different. Having carefully studied our tips and useful recommendations, you can easily select the appropriate fasteners and carry out their installation without errors.
