Graffiti in the interior

Graffiti in the interior

The word "graffiti" was borrowed from the Italian language, where it means "scratched." For many older people, this concept causes unpleasant associations with a crowd of self-asserting teenagers who spoil the city's architecture with their creative efforts. In fact, graffiti is a modern art form, and professional graffiti artists are true masters of their craft, whose work is admired, not condemned. You can not disfigure with beautiful drawings, but decorate the city: the facades of houses, factories, unattractive and boring fences. They began to use graffiti in the interior recently, since this art has long been considered exclusively street. Let's talk about how to choose an original sketch for the design style and consider a detailed master class for beginners on wall decor using paints in spray cans.

Appearance story

Regarding the age of graffiti as an art, there is no consensus. A relatively new word is associated exclusively with the drawings on the brick walls that entertain hooligan teens. Scratched paintings, that is, primitive cave art is considered the first manifestation of art in the history of mankind. People tried to express their emotions, to inform about victories, to save significant moments of their life. Then the painting went along a different path, acquiring graceful forms and a special spirituality, and graffiti gradually began to degrade, until it completely slipped into love confessions on brick walls, inscriptions-protests against the current regime and memos from the category “Here was ...”. Decline gave way to prosperity only in the second half of the last century in New York. Representatives of the younger generation, full of nihilism, spoiled urban property - subway train cars. Since any master wants to be recognized, teenagers put their autographs - “tags”, which means “label” in English. Compared to the signatures of modern graffiti artists made in sophisticated technology, these “marks” look very primitive. But time passed, and the level of skill increased. Graffitists strayed into separate gangs, each of which sought to win in conditional competition. Of course, their activity was considered a direct violation of the law, so many, being caught, were paid fines or even years of life in prison. Others voluntarily left, unable to constantly observe the destruction of their wall paintings. In the 70s and 80s, street art of graffiti was divided into stylistic trends.Toward the beginning of the new century, the authorities began to react less sharply to the work of rebellious artists and instead of damaging property, their work began to decorate the city. From the USA street art leaked to the UK, Italy, France, Germany. When a new youth dance appeared - break dance, graffiti artists designed the scenery on the venues where the performances were held. In the USSR, street art appeared in about 80 - 90s, but its development was painful due to the collapse of the country. Graffiti was mainly used to protest what was happening.

Graffiti Interior

Mentioning the history of street art, one cannot but recall Banksy. This is the most famous underground graffiti artist whose work on topical topics is always filled with subtle irony. Who is hiding behind the mask of the elusive king of "rock art", no one knows until now. Following Banksy on an impromptu pedestal, pioneers Jean-Baptiste Basquiat, Stash, Keith Haring and our contemporary Shepard Fairy settled down.

Materials used for drawing

The instrumental set of an experienced graffiti artist includes the following items:

  • Spray can with paint. This is the main working tool, without which the masters of street art, as without hands. To work with him you will need a certain skill, which can be obtained during hard training on flat surfaces. In the minds of modern people, spray paint and street art are combined into one concept.
  • Roller. With it, the surface is primed before drawing or used as an independent art tool when large-scale work with the creation of huge images is planned. Hard-to-reach spots are also painted with a roller attached to a long stick.
  • Marker. As important as spray paint. With it, you can create a picture from scratch or correct an existing one. Street art professionals use both tools.Although there is a wide range of these products in stationery stores, there is a tradition in the culture of graffiti artists: many of them make DIY markers. For these purposes, empty bottles of oblong-form cosmetics or household chemicals are used, and they are filled with stamp or shoe paint. Complete the process by fixing a homemade applicator.
  • Respirator. It is necessary when working with spray paint, as it easily clogs the airways.
  • Fire extinguisher. An original tool that they began to use instead of a brush just a couple of decades ago. Using a fire extinguisher, you can get a powerful stream of paint. Many street art artists prefer this option, rather than spray paint, if they plan to put a large picture on the wall. It is inconvenient only in that it is problematic to recharge it.
  • Spray gun. He replaced the less practical fire extinguishers. This is not about the bottle with the nozzle, which is sprayed with indoor flowers. In this case, use a large unit with a cylinder, which is mounted behind the spray. With such equipment gardeners walk along potato rows to get rid of the invasion of striped pests. Spray guns are convenient in that they can regulate the pressure, and, accordingly, the ejection force of the ink jet. They are easy to recharge and the unit fits in a backpack.

Paint

Also among the inventory of street artists there is a separate group of "scratchers", that is, "scratches". This type includes any sharpened objects with which you can apply a relief pattern to the surface. Some graffitists consider this tool to be barbaric, as it definitely spoils the city’s property and the authorities will not be able to do just one painting over.

Graffiti and style

The following main directions are distinguished in street art:

  • Bombing.Extreme art, because images are applied quickly to moving "canvases" (trains, buses).
  • Writing The main style, which is characterized by the application of inscriptions in different fonts.
  • Tagging. Concise image of their signatures.
  • Scratching. Scratching the image, not its drawing.
  • Advertising. Graffiti artists also need to eat, so they are increasingly being hired by advertising agencies to bring information about their products or services to the masses.

Graffiti leaked into the interior design not so long ago. At first, thematic institutions: cafes and bars began to decorate with inscriptions and drawings. Then pioneers among designers who were not afraid to take risks began to combine street art with styles that were flexible to modern solutions. These include loft, high-tech, pop art, futurism, avant-garde, fusion and even minimalism. In apartments, street art has replaced boring murals. Street drawings look most effective in modern studios, where there are usually high walls.

Graffiti in the interior of different rooms

Author's drawings on the walls will make any interior unique and create a special atmosphere. At will, graffiti can be bright and defiant or tender, romantic. In street art, not only inscriptions are used, but also full-blown paintings: futuristic, avant-garde, minimalistic or surrealistic. For each room, they choose their own drawing, which will be in harmony with the rest of the decor and fit into the design concept.

Living room

In the living room, graffiti will become a stylish accent wall decoration. When the atmosphere is calm, pastel colors, the picture can literally “blow up” a serious atmosphere, if it is done in bright colors. In the rooms decorated in the style of pop art, a popular technique is used with the transfer of comic book pages to the decorated surfaces. Acid colors are considered mandatory when creating collages from images of Warhol, Monroe, Liverpool Four. Moreover, the pictures must be duplicated in different scales. Surprisingly, modern graffiti can even come to modernity (a more recent version of the classical style), if the painting or engraving of some famous artist (Jan Vermeer, Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Jerome Bosch, Van Gogh) is selected as a sample.

Graffiti in the living room

In the loft lounge, graffiti is applied directly to the brickwork. As a result, the effect of being on the street only intensifies. The wall will be perfectly combined with expensive furniture and surfaces of luxurious finishing materials.

Bedroom

The theme for sleeping graffiti is not recommended to choose from aggressive or overly catchy options. Nevertheless, they relax in this room, and acidic inscriptions are unlikely to stimulate a healthy sleep. The brainchild of street art, as a rule, is placed on the wall at the head of the bed. City panoramas, musical themes, natural landscapes will look stylish and romantic. Graffiti culture is less categorical, as many might think. It is characterized by the image of absolutely any objects, so even pink hearts or landscapes with ears of corn and field grass under the night sky can be depicted in this technique.

Graffiti in the bedroom

If the master draws a corridor or a continuation of the room, then the room will visually become larger. This simple technique works at the expense of perspective.

Children

Graffiti in the children's room is a great way for self-expression of both a young man and a girl. The far-sighted parents, allowing the child to decorate the wall in their room on their own, will position him towards themselves, show that they are able to encourage their ideas. Perhaps after such a young graffiti artist, he will be carried away by street art on a professional level, but street artists are not the worst company. For teenage bedrooms, images of favorite superheroes, portraits of performers and groups, vivid potpourri paintings from inscriptions mixed with animals are suitable. For children's rooms where the baby lives, use less catchy themes and simply decorate the walls with cartoon and fairy-tale characters.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, street art decorates not only the wall near the dining area, but also an apron, the lower part of the bar counter or headset. In rooms where a modern version of furniture is used, where the height of the items does not exceed 1-1.3 m, use volumetric images with "torn edges". They horizontally pass through the entire surface of one wall and partially affect another. If the kitchen window is too small, then on a piece of brickwork draw the second with a magnificent view of the street or a quiet back yard. Griffiti can be applied to any surface. Street art blends even with tiles. An unusual solution would be to place graffiti paintings on the wall in a roughly knitted frame made of metal or wood. Creative guests will appreciate the ironic attempt of the owners to squeeze free street art into their home frames.

Bathroom

Introducing street art into the bathroom should be with great care. Standard bathrooms have a too small footage, and an incorrectly selected design can visually narrow the space. Continuous decor in calm shades of green, blue, yellow will look amazing and unusual. A panorama of the underwater world adorns all the walls and ceiling on purpose, without focusing on corners and transitions. Round bogus windows play the role of portholes of the bathyscaphe.

We draw with our own hands - the method of work

Beginners are encouraged to use templates or stencils. This method will facilitate the work and will focus on the correct selection of colors. After the graffiti artist reaches his hand and feels more confident, you can apply drawings manually. By the way, this is exactly what Banksy uses. In order not to be noticed at work, he prepares a template in advance according to the author’s painting, and on the spot only fills it with paints. If you want the drawing to be portable, then instead of a brick wall, it is recommended to use a sheet of hardboard. Before working with spray paint, you need to prepare the surface. It is cleaned of dirt and degreased. This will provide a good bond between the wall and the pigments. Before work, the can is thoroughly shaken so that its contents are mixed until smooth. A respirator and safety glasses are put on the face. A test jet is released onto a foreign object to evaluate color saturation. The distance from the spray can to the wall to be decorated should be approximately 25 cm. Do not stay for a long time in one place, as excess paint will begin to drain, unless, of course, smudges are not part of the composition. When working with a vertical surface, they begin to draw from above and gradually move down. If you need to apply two layers, then between the first stage of staining and the second take a break of half an hour. The spray effect is created using a brush dipped in paint.

Conclusion

Graffiti has long passed from the category of vandalism to the status of a full flow in art. The youth of the 80s should express their gratitude for this, who expressed themselves by painting walls and other "plain" surfaces. With the help of graffiti, you can not only create a stylish, unique decoration for the interior, but also discover new talents in yourself, because art has the ability to drag on.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
